Just wondering, what is your prefrence in the order of tools on your hot bar.
Mine is Pickaxe, then shovel, then sword, then axe, and bow if i have one.
Also do you use the mouse scrow or the number pad?
From left to right:
[64 Cobblestone] [64 Dirt] [Water Bucket] [64 Bread] [Iron Pickaxe] [Stone Pickaxe] [64 Torches] [Sharpness IV Diamond Sword] [Power I Bow]
That's what I usually do. I use numbers since when I use scrolling it moves too quick. And I don't even have a mouse for my Laptop. :/
Buy a Logitech wireless mouse. You can get a good one for 10 - 20$. But be careful, the M505 has clicker problems. My M305 works great and was like 15$.
My setup changes depending on the task and is centred around making the most useful things in the first four slots where . My template is this:
1. Sword
2. Secondary tool for job (torches, saplings, extra pick, buckets, etc)
3. Primary tool for job
4. Food or building blocks (depending on if current task requires me to be able to place blocks quickly from reaction, like when mining).
5. Food or building blocks (if food in slot 4 this is building blocks and vice versa)
6. Something almost universally useful if not already in 1st or 2nd slot (think buckets, torches, extra blocks, potions, etc)
7-9. Extra miscellaneous slots. I don't use these slots much because I have to use the scrollwheel to get to them.

Every time that someone on the support forums doesn't say anything after I tell them a possible solution, I assume that they are having too much fun enjoying their fixed Minecraft to reply.
when you're exploring unlit caves the torch is what you usually have in your hand, so having the sword and bow right beside the torch is lots easier to switch to when you need them.
I also use the dirt/gravel/bucket/food slots for whatever other material I need to do what I'm doing. the first 4 slots never change.
I'll swap out the dirt for other blocks like cobblestone and the watch for a water bucket if I'm going mining deep. l replace it with another pickaxe if I'm doing Nether stuff.

Don't like the terrain? Go build your own. You can totally do that in this game.
I never use the scroll, only because my mouse has the worst scroll button ever which you pretty much can't use. I always use numbers, which I am quite used to.

Sword, Pickaxe, Axe, Shovel, Bow, Melon, Steak/Porkchops, Torches, Compass.
Assuming I have those items.

EDIT: 100th post. Me gusta.
Mouse scrolling. Number pressing, in my opinion, is too much work to memorize and apply in the heat of combat.
i can't even use the mouse scroll, i have this retarded nub thing that is way too sensitive.
Try finding a way to change the sensitivity of it. Maybe in control panel. By the way, your avatar is blurry.

And then the rest depends on the situation.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Slot 8 and 9 usually contain a tool or block.
cool
= water bucket
= whatever food is most available

Mining: Pick, Torches, Food, Dirt/Cobble, Sword, Bow, Water Bucket, Watch.
If I have all of those items and I use the scroll wheel.
