They're troubled people.
I mean, every night you're plagued by zombies who try to break down your doors and murder all outside, soon being it so that those can turn to other Zombies too.
Their only option for being safe is an unreliable machination that can only exist in large societies.
They're stuck permanently on Adventure Mode, as they can't break or place blocks.
And they are always looted by vicious Steve-Beasts, who steal their crops, books, and smithy products.
I do admit, I would of liked Pigmen better, but now they're here, and we have to help them. It's like mutant animals. We didn't want them, but now that they're here we have to do something to help them so they can survive like everything else.
I read somewhere once that they were made to look like the shopkeeper in... I forgot the name of it, some other game. It was something generic like Dungeon Quest, I think.
Anyway, the point is to not take away from the idea that (in SSP) you're the only human in the world. The Testificates build villages, craft things, and have a quiet little culture, but they're not human. My personal theory is that they're post-human, a different primate species that evolved since the event that left the player the only human and the entire world infested with human zombies.

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
This. I really don't like how they look, but they don't look like Steve, and that was a genious thought. This way, you can have populated villages, and you are still the only one of your specie.
And for some reasson, everytime I see a Testificate, I remember the Ood (from Doctor Who) They are peaceful, they always want to help, they usually need help to survive, they are quiet... but I always have the feeling that they could turn into a killing beast in 0.5 seconds.
I think they are fine i think pigmen should be added as maybe rare groups of them who build little dirt huts and you can trade with like a rare "Villager 2.0"
They are quiet, never making a sound
They don't injure you
They trade (although they tend to try to rip you off)
They are helpless, almost forcing you to help them
I am ninja'd far too often.

I think of the Ood sometimes too.
