So I am starting to play again after a long time and I am deciding to just start a new game. Although, is the first thing I want to do before settling in going to be to travel around and find a village in my world?

"Did that creeper just blow up my house? OMG THAT CREEPER JUST BLEW UP MY HOUSE!?"
I don't know if this will help but here it is anyway.
Each individual spawn attempt succeeds only if all of the following conditions are met:
There must be no players and no player spawn points within a 24 block distance (spherical) of the spawning block
If it's a squid, then...
the spawning block must contain liquid (water or lava)
the spawning block must be between level 45 and 62, inclusive
the spawning mob must not be obstructed by other mobs
If it's not a squid, then...
the spawning block itself must be non-opaque and non-liquid
the block directly below it must be opaque
the block directly above it must be non-opaque
the spawning mob must not be obstructed by blocks, other mobs, or water
If it's an animal, then... (SHEEP)
the block directly below the spawning block must be grass
the light level of the spawning block must be 9 or brighter
if it's an ocelot, then...
the spawning block must be above level 62
the block directly below the spawning block must be grass or leaves
there is a 1/3 chance the spawn will fail
If it's a hostile mob in the overworld, then...
the light level of the spawning block must be 7 or darker, and more light increases the chance that the spawn will fail
sunlight falling on the spawning block further increases the chance that the spawn will fail, by up to 50%
If it's a slime, then...
the spawning block must be in a chunk eligible to spawn slimes (see the Slime page for details)
the spawning block must be below level 40
for medium and large slimes, the difficulty must not be set to peaceful
Still looking for my first village after a weekend in my 1st 1.3 game. Found some desert ruins (no chest, nothing in there except orange wool cubes and smooth sandstone to pillage). I explored two full paper maps and no village
I built a tower in my desert house and connected it with a bridge to a jungle tree house... I think I will just keep that bridge going in all directions, should be easier to see any village up high in the sky than running on the ground.
woooo thanks about the hidden chest in the desert temple! Can't wait to go find that tonight!
as for using superflat, I don't want to do that. I want to find the village by walking into it... the same way I stumble upon strongholds & abandoned mines. no tricks! sheer dumb pigheadedness and good walking shoes!
Note when you break wool blocks in the center of desert ruins to get to the chests, make a stairway down around the parimeter and be aware of pressure plates on the TNT. Otherwise you go BOOM!
I actually found a desert temple while on my search for a village. But I stepped on the pressure plate by accident and everything was gone. I felt like quite the idiot.
And so to continue looking for a village I should only be looking in desert and plain biomes?

Yes. But villages aren't that important. I would focus on mining, and crafting. It's more fun.
It depends. If you really want to traverse through the entire map then sure. Personally I wouldn't because all villages have to offer is villagers and lots of small shelters.

Well now with the whole emerald/currency thing they have a lot more to offer.

-.- Do you happen to know where the chests are supposed to be located in the desert temples?
If you enter the seed "Enchantment!", without the quotes, you spawn on a forest right between a plains and desert and there's an NPC village about 30 seconds of walking away if you want to see one, or have a nice little map with one right there.

So I guess I am continuing on this adventure on finding a village.
About how rare are they to spawn do you know?

I have played a lot of this game already. Just making this new world and trying to get the most out of it with villages in this new patch.
Once I find the village (which is taking forever) I will begin to settle in.
