Emeralds are a currency. Plus, it's difficult to just add a new tier of tool material without either severely effing up the already established tiers or producing a "junk" tier with absolutely no worth.
Comic artist, indie game dev, lots of things. Click image to check out my latest comic series?

Leather is harder to obtain than iron, and worse than iron, so it's pointless to make it. It's only viable in "special rules" games ie. CTM, adventure maps, etc.
Chainmail can't be crafted, and by the time you can buy it, you already have multiple suits of iron/diamond. It's also only slightly less expensive to buy than diamond armor...
Gold is more of a "side tier" and pointless to craft.
You either wear nothing, iron, or diamond.
The problem is that you can already turn emeralds into armor and tools, by trading. This means that emerald has no effective "armor value" and cannot translate into its own craftable armor, unless it was just for looks like gold.
Diamonds are considered Emeralds in the game coding, as that was its original name on its release, so it might mess some things up in the game and developers will have to change that.
Well maybe Emeralds will still be called Rubies in the game coding? Probably not... I think.
Anyway. Tell me. Would you turn your dollar bills and pennies into a suit of armor and tools? I doubt it.

They already changed that, I believe.
Anyway, since emeralds are more of a currency, I don't think you should be able to make tools from them.
You know what would be sweet? If you could actually go in and edit the way your little lego man looks in Minecraft. Then you could give him emo hair and a flannel shirt! Or green armor!
Explain to me why we need another tier and why you think Emerald should be it and I'll let you get away without an internet argument.
emeralds are suposed to be rarer then anything else, if used for armor or weapons, i say make it even rarer.
why? people in this thread alone were just complaining about diffrent tiers, and their usefulness. it takes about 20-30 minutes to get a fulls utie of diamond armor and weapons off a fresh server.
so adding in a very rare ore, that can be made into armor, that gave it bonouses like, enchants only that item can attain, having more durability perhaps or maybe inate powers would give players who complain its to easy to get diamond something to do, it owuld make it better by a large enough margine to make it worth it, and it makes it valuable on its own, not by arbitrary standerds emeralds are valuable at the moment.

It's as pointless as coal tools and armor.
