Hacking in Minecraft is different from the rest of the world. And if you don't believe so, then please yell at the OP, anyone who posted on this thread, or really anyone else who plays Minecraft and uses the term "hacking" to refer to cheating on a server, too. I can't be the only one getting yelled at.
In the poll it refers to hacking as cheating. The OP refers to hacking as cheating.

You're limiting the word hacking to just one definition.
I'm not going to go looking for a dictionary definition because I probably wouldn't find one, but the word is also used in a gaming sense to refer to players who gain an unfair advantage over others by modifying the game files.
For example, I admin on a Day of Defeat:Source server. We often ban players for hacking - and "hacking" is the reason that is recorded in the ban software. These are all mods, but they make the game unfair for the people who don't have them. Wallhacks, where the player can see through walls. Aimbots, where the computer aims for them. Speedhacks, where they move faster than the other players etc.
This sort of 'hacking' can be quite specific. It normally means that the player has somehow hacked their way around anti-cheating measures that are in place on servers. Trying to break through some kind of safeguards without permission, is quite similar to your definition of hacking above.
In the same way, I imagine that this can apply to minecraft servers. I've not administered on minecraft, but I can be pretty sure that there are measures in place to prevent players from using their own mods on servers. So players 'hack' their way around these measures.
Naturally, you can't apply this to singleplayer, because players are free to mod the game to their heart's content. And I appreciate that it gives a wide range of meaning to the word hack, because it can refer to in-game cheats or it can refer to people playing on hacked clients. Obviously the difference being that one steals from Mojang and the other one does not. But the fact remains that the word hacking can and does apply to the practice of multiplayer cheating.
EDIT: ^^ I see this chap posted pretty much the same thing as I was typing this...
That just shows your a noob. I am not against mods, i love that the comunity can add stuff, in fact i have made a few successful mods my self , its just the ones that make it unfair
So playing mods immediately makes you a noob? Many players play with mods because they have gotten bored with vanilla minecraft, not because theyre lazy..
Why hate on it i use it to world edit and stuff cause its faster terraforming and flatting a space block by block plus who cares what person does on their singleplayer wolrd it does not impact anyone else in the mc community. Also there are many things to stop players from xraying, and hacking into the server but screwing with people you don't like and watching them rage is pretty hilarious.Oh and lastly mod are a big part of minecraft they make new objectives and challenges that playing standard vannila does not offer

What you're referring to is a mod that you consider to be detrimental, not a hack If one of these players successfully exploited a loophole in your server to gain admin permissions, that would be hacking. Altering a perfectly normally packet or process in their client doesn't give them any extra information than normal, in certain cases it could get them less. Hacking unfortunately is used as slang for anything someone doesn't understand in a server. "Hacked" clients, "hacking" mods and "hacking" tools are everywhere. Again, I have seen exactly ONE tool that is an actual hacking technique. The rest are just mods that people disapprove of
That's mods, not hacks. Before calling me a dumbass, please learn the difference between the two. I mod my game as well, but I don't go on servers to X-Ray for diamonds, Kill-Aura people at spawn and then Speed-Hack away.
Oh right sorry I thought you were another dumbass who thought they were the same.

Again, to reiterate my point. You may not call these things hacks, but the gaming community in general does. You're adopting a much narrower definition of hacking than the majority of people do. In its broadest sense, people use the word hack to refer to alterations to programs.
For example, one of the definitions that the Oxford Dictionary provides for hack is
"a piece of computer code which performs some function, especially an unofficial alternative or addition to a commercial program:
freeware and shareware hacks"
This is a pretty close definition of modding, and it explains why people can refer to mods as hacks. I don't, and it gets confusing when people do. But I do adopt the general gamer's version of 'hacking' which is the use of mods for the purposes of cheating in a multiplayer game.
These things often do work around the exploiting of loopholes, because the servers are set up to prevent them. After all, nobody wants to play against an opponent with an aimbot.
It's not that people throw the term around for things that they don't understand, it's that hacking has taken on a broader definition than the one you ascribe to it.
This thread sucks. Hate hacks? Don’t use them. I use these “hacks” you call. Real hacked clients such as Nodus, etc, and it’s used for griefing, which doesn’t make you a noob. Stop being a noob Beacle, I think you should actually use these “hacks” you call before you post a stupid thread about it.
Also I flymod, XRay, cheat, etc. Does that make me a noob? No. It’s the way I want to play it. Actually, calling a group, no, a lot of people a noob, is basically insulting especially if they’re a rank higher than you. Don’t want people to use hacks? Ban them. Make your own server. Play on singleplayer. It only harms you. Also there are “plugins” such as LogBlock that logs blocks so admins can be informed. Is that cheating? No. It can help in griefing situations: Someone’s house got griefed. Admins use LogBlock to see who griefed. Bans griefer. People can’t get away. Cheating? As before, no.
calling a group, no, a lot of people a noob, is basically insulting
So it is only insulting if he calls groups noobs.. but when you call somebody a noob it is OK (you called me noob also)..Does this have to do with the number of people being called noobs, or is it your superior rank master `Redstone Miner ` that gives you that privilege
especially if they’re a rank higher than you.
This really is starting to get to your head buddy, can someone please explain to him that these ranks don`t mean anything in the real world, especially when everybody can see how you got to that `rank` just by reading your posts
We've always had a large portion of the community that creates and shares maps. Some maps contain adventure style components, others contain incredible creations that people are willing to share so people can add them to their own saves or servers. There was a time when creative was not an option in the game, so this section of the community relied on mods like Too Many Items and Single player commands. I resent you saying things like 'TMI is the worst mod of all time' when they've clearly had a very useful and positive effect on the way a lot of people play the game. There is NO limit to what you can (or should be allowed to) do in a single player map. It's your world, do what you like with it
Using mods in single player is up to the player. Using mods to your advantage in SMP is just dumb. Nobody should do it. If it's a gameplay modifying hack that's server-side, well, it's perfectly fine. Not my style but it could be to some people.
I don't even need cheats to get 2 stacks of diamonds. All I need is a fortune III pick and some patience. All using hacks to get them does is ruin the experience for yourself and others.

I have auto-kick for hacks, I don't mind if they keep it in single-player though, ain't harming me. So I guess you could say against for multi-player.. don't care for single-player.
anti-cheat?

If you can read this you have a very large computer screen or good eye-sight! Here is a bigger version If you can read this you have a very large computer screen or good eye-sight!
Honestly, I use Too Many Items, But I use they more for just building maps, and If I fall in Lava on a parkour map, I don't just sit there in lava and die. Otherwise, I don't cheat. I Hate the X-Ray cheaters. They steal all the diamonds from good working people, just trying to find them.
I should have added - there is a big difference between using hacks/mods in your own single player map and using them to your advantage on a multiplayer server. Using them on a server is pretty poor form and thankfully most admins are pretty good at stamping it out.
I think hacking/Cheating in a game causing sever noobish behaviour.
I think it is al right to finish the game several times do everything you possibly can
then you could,
but in Minecraft Survival THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR HACKING!, Thats why mojang added Creative mode
Hacking needs to be stopped before even more people become really noobs at our classic games.
This, a million times this. Honestly, I find it funny because they're like "NOO I GOT IT LEGIT!", okay, well being your time on the server was less than an hour... Hmm...
^^ I mis-read that. This is completely wrong..
Honestly though, if you hack use mods on your SSP world, fine with me, it doesn't affect me, but when you login to my SMP server, you are obligied to follow my rules. If I say no use of X-Ray or TMI (Well you can't but whatever). If you want to try to use them, fine. But don't be upset when you end up banned, and it doesn't mean go posting stuff like "It was an accident".
But, whatever. No one is forcing you to have no mods or have any mods (Unless you go on a modded server, of course).
TL-DR; To each his own, is what I say. However, when you're with others, I think you should play fair and obey the rules.
