Quick question: the wiki states the following about Ghasts:
Unlike most other aggressive mobs, the Ghast does not have a pursuit mode - it does not attempt to draw closer to the player when at long range (and likewise is not particularly likely to float away). Compared to other mobs, the Ghast has a very long search range and can target a player up to 100 blocks away.[1] When the player comes within about sixteen blocks, the Ghast will open fire and attempt to gain altitude.
So they state that Ghasts do NOT attempt to follow you when they realize your presence. They also state that Ghasts realize your presence up to 100 blocks away, and they also state that Ghasts only open fire up to 16 blocks away.
If my understanding is correct, then what does exactly the awareness issue of 100 blocks affect? It seems redundant...
I believe that it doesn't do anything particular, it's just that ghasts need a way to locate the player. All aggressive mobs need that distance value to be able to attack.
Ask Notch. He put a lot of stupid and redundant things into the game (Note= Saddles).
However, I think the Wiki is wrong about they only shooting from 16 blocks away. I know it's not from 100 blocks away like their sight, but I know it's a bigger distance than sixteen. Maybe thiry-two, or sixty-four?

Yeah, well, basically that's one weird thing, maybe an easter egg (if I properly understand what they are), but it's one of my least discomforts for the time being.
The wiki is poorly written, I believe they meant to say: When the player comes within about sixteen blocks, the Ghast will open fire and attempt to gain altitude. They should already be shooting at you if you're within 16 blocks, since apparently their range is 100.
Well I've just had a conflict with one Ghast, and I am sure his second shot was at least 32 blocks far!! There is definitely some fishy stuff around here.
I'm into checking and debugging the source code to figure the facts. Is the modding zone the correct place to ask about such things?

There isn't a specific place to talk about the minecraft code/inner workings, but you will definitively have more support there. The closest forum for your question would be in the Mods Discussion forum.
Yes, I forgot to mention: The first time I died in the Nether, it was by one Ghast, I did not click respawn for full four minutes (trauma, if you can say), and when I did, I went immediately to re-enter the portal. I was welcomed by at least five Ghasts.
That, makes me doubt about the fact that they do NOT pursue you, although they seem to NOT pursue you in other instances, which is baffling.
By the way, does the worlds you are not in at a specific time freeze? For instance, if I'm in the Overworld, does the Nether freeze it's time? and vice versa?

Time doesn't freeze, but updates don't occur in chunks that you don't have loaded. For example, if you break down a tree at midnight and enter the Nether and then return to the overworld 10 minutes later, it'll be mid-day but the leaves from the tree will still be there and begin to decay once the area is loaded.

Ghasts don't actually fly, unlike Blazes. They just float, so even with a mod that has an item that allows flight, getting the Return to Sender achievement can be a challenge. Most of the time the fireballs I hit with my sword hit the cavern wall, or a structure like a fortress.
You really have to be in close range to be able to hit one with its own fireball, as it usually drifts out of range.

So, basically the only thing that keeps counting is day/night cycle, but other stuff does not process while you are away, since chunks of worlds you are not in are NOT loaded.

Without seeking to get it, I acquired it on my 3rd Ghast kill. It was at long range (around 30 blocks), and I think I had slightly higher ground than him. My arrow hit his fireball at like 20% distance between both of us, with the reflection point being closer to him.
and somehow, I feel like my last paragraph is a bit complex... don't hesitate to ask for a re-explanation if you want one.

I don't mind. How?
