I was exploring around in the nether looking for gravel to make a bridge over a lava ocean back to my portal because a lava fall had created a barricade of lava when i wasn't looking. The portal was basically surrounded by lava. I saw some gravel next to some soul sand and didn't notice the gravel had a different color. It had a light purple-ish color. I noticed that patch of gravel was different because there was some regular gravel right next to it. I mined one block of it and the side of the block was the regular gravel color. It was kind of similar to a farmblock, only the top of the block being different. Any explanation of this?
You mean that if gravel gets struck by lightning, it turns purple? Awesome. Never happened to me before, though.

As others have said to the point of it being silly; it was a lighting error. Out of curiousity, I'd like to know what Brightness/Video settings you had when you experienced this.

Just joking. It was a lighting error. But I think you should be able to dye blocks.
