Whoever answered vanilla is an idiot. A server with no plugins is terrible; Factions and McMMO are amazing!
What about SSP? and also the only server i play on has no plugins whatsoever and its incredibly fun.
OT, I've never used a mod or wanted to, minecraft is great the way it is. i've been playing since 1.4 and i still don't get bored at all.
STRAWBERRY.

This being said, I prefer non-vanilla SSP, but I only have one or two mods, such as ExtraBiomesXL, for SMP the same, Bukkit servers seem to be faster and less glitchy than vanilla (Personal experience only, this could be different for others.) and I like various new challenges. However, I do enjoy vanilla from time to time as well, playing vanilla SSP after a long Bukkit experience can open your eyes to how cool Minecraft is again.
Depends on the mods. Some mods really just expand on what you can build in minecraft which is really cool. Especially for a person like me who likes to build things with a purpose instead of just looking good. You can only build so many things in vanilla minecraft while if you get things like industrial craft, forestry, build craft, and thaumcraft it really takes the game to a whole other level.

Vanilla servers is very un-convenient. After you make a masterpiece, and go exploring somewhere and dies. Next thing happens is reason why some people hate vanilla servers
Vanilla. I like playing the game without extras that make the game either too easy/hard to survive or make the game so drawn away from what it was originally.

The pen is mightier than the sword. I keep the sword for the day I run out of ink.
I prefer vanilla mainly because blocks look as they where intended too and everyone's build makes sense since the same pallet is being used. "Yeah im sure your wood house looks great with that texture pack.... but back in reality... it looks like a newb shack."
For SMP I use plugins to maintain the world for obvious reasons.
The main viral problem I see with servers that have /home / spawn commands is that server infrastructure is horrible, hardly any paths or direction and just a bunch of mess. Best description would be is that; allot of servers look like a kids messy bedroom when teleporting is freely allowed.
In the end it all boils down to personal preference and perspective but for me I enjoy playing and hosting the game as it was intended.

Back in the beta and alpha I understood why people loved mods, but now there is so much stuff that you don't need mods to have an awesome time! But i will confess to loving factions when i play online, but for SSP vanilla is fine
