So, I have found that most people have trouble exploring the nether to get their blaze rods and such, so I am here to advise you on how to survive the nether!
Rule 1: NEVER and I say NEVER bring any diamonds to the Nether. If you were wearing diamond armor and you died, well you can say goodbye to it because it either burned in lava/fire OR it survived but it's too far away for you to retrieve.
Just don't do it, it will save you a lot of grief.
Rule 2:Bring a bow and a fishing rod. If your bow cant reach a dastardly ghast, the fishing rod can. Yank that sucker towards you and slice/shoot it.
Rule 3: Pigmen are nice! Or not. Just don't attack them or they will rape you. Also, don't let the ghasts shoot them, they will blame it on you!
Rule 4: Stay away from lava! Where there is lava, there's death, and where there's lava death, there's destroyed items. And even if you do stay away from lava, all that netherrack fire will burn the items.
Rule 5: Bring cobblestone! Cobblestone wont get blown up by ghasts or set on fire like netherrack, so placing cobblestone everywhere will help you reach your goal!
Rule 6: Finding a fortress. I know finding a nether fortress can be hard, and it may make you want to restart your world if it isnt the first thing you see, but they are possible to find! If you have Rei's/Zan's minimap mod, mark your portal as a waypoint so you dont lose it. And when you find that fortress, mark it too! (Note: If there is a lot of lava standing between you and the nether fortress, it's probably a bad idea.)
Rule 7: Killing the blazes. We all know that you NEED blaze rods from blazes to beat the game, but killing blazes can be hard! Before you attempt to kill any blazes, turn on peaceful and destroy most of the blaze spawners so that there is only one left. This will minimize the chance of you being buttraped by flaming flying gold things.
That is all I have for now, +1's and comments are appreciated. If you have anything else that you think I should add, send me a comment!
This is a great list for beginners to look at, but Rule 7 seems kind-of cheap.
Perhaps change it too: Try to not get them all to chase you, try and keep only 1 of them attacking you at a time, and deal with them as such. Even better, try and bottleneck them into a single-file hallway/doorframe.
My version is much simpler and doesn't involve pansy-**** peaceful mode.
Rule 1: Wear iron armor.
Rule 2: If you have access to them, have fire resistance potions on hand.
Rule 3: Don't attack pigzombies.
Rule 4: Kill Ghasts and Blazes with a bow from a distance, and retreat if you get hit by a blaze.
1. Don't attack pig zombies.
2. Kill a couple of blazemen (while killing them can be hard, it's rather simple to sacrifice some health just to kill some of them) and get two blaze rods. Then return to the surface.
3. Make a potion of fire resistance.
4. Return to the Nether.
5. Drink the potion.
6. Profit.
You forgot:
cobble base
tree farm with cobble walls around it
ender chest for sending glowstone/blaze rods/ghast tears etc. back home
redsone zombie pig trap
chicken/wheat/watermelon farm for getting food in the nether
nether wart farm/ brewing room (for making potion of fire resistance, very handy in the nether)
enchantment table (IF you have excess diamond)
feel free to post!
And re: Rule 3 -- pigmen will not blame it on you unless you've deflected the ghast's fireball at them. If it's actually coming from the ghast then they will get angry at the ghast (just the one though, not the whole group I don't believe, and also it won't matter much since they most likely won't be able to reach him to fight back anyway.)
I like to make bridges with dirt. It sounds stupid but if your not going to use it for anything else, use it there.
I wouldn't recommend this, as a ghast's fireball will ruin your day (not to mention your bridge). I always use cobble for building in the nether because it's the most plentiful but you can also use stone, brick, stone brick, nether brick, iron blocks, or end stone. All of those are ghast-proof, even a direct hit from a fireball won't destroy those.

The problem here is you have to have been to the Nether before to get Fire Resist Potions, this is a guide for first timers

Whoa whoa whoa, we are gathering resources from the Nether, not living there. And Ender Chests arent even out yet.

This is not so, if they get hurt, they will attack the closest non-pigmen entity which is probably you, the player
1. Full Iron Armor
2. Diamond Sword.
3. Save Nether Portal Coordinates.
4. Run around avoiding lava holes.
It's not as hard as you guys make it seem >_> Ghasts aren't even a threat when it's so easy to deflect the fireball. Blazes are pretty hard to defeat unless you have fire resistance potions on hand like Kholdstare said.

Are you sure? What's your source? I'm almost positive I've heard them squeal in pain when I've dodged fireballs before, and they never attack me unless I actually attack them first. In fact, according to the wiki, even deflecting a fireball at them won't make them attack you. And I don't play multiplayer, but I was under the impression that one person attacking them would only make them aggressive toward that player, not toward everyone else. Is that wrong as well?

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

Don't cheat though. If you're going to cheat might as well just spawn some blaze rods in your inventory. Save some time.
