Who else doesn't even bother mining coal after they've settled in and for those of you who do and have plenty of coal in your chests, do you feel that mining the entire coal vein is a chore?
Coal is fun to get for me :tongue.gif: I remember how when I first saw coal, I was like... ew, coal! there's charcoal now! (I read the wiki) But after I mined out this huge double vein in a cave, I found a dungeon (1.7.3) and I was content. Now I mine coal, and it almost always yields coolio stuff.
I mine it because I use wood for building nice houses and that it takes a bit to cook wood for charcoal. Coal is easy to find, and you only need a wood pick for it.
I keep tons of coal, I seem to always be cooking up some smooth stone or some delicious chicken. It could be toned down a bit, but I the level it spawns at is fine.
Remember, its better to have it readily available than to not be able to find it when you need it.
Back in the day, coal was extremely important to have. You see, if you didn't find coal on your first night, your best bet for survival would be the 3-deep hole with dirt on top.
Now you young whipper-snappers are complaining about too much coal?
Ah, someone else who feels this way. I feel obligated to mine it out, since it's a useful resource. Yet it just takes so long with a stone pick that it's a tad boring.

Will you die2nite?
Seriously, think.
'The stone is annoying because it gets between me and the ores.'
That is how much sense you make.
I THROW THEM ON THE GROOUUUUNNNDD!!
