Some Background
It seems like most survival journals I've read are written as the author progresses. I've never done one because this is a project I'm making Let's Play videos for and that takes a huge amount of time, and I didn't know if it's considered spam to post your videos in one place and make a post of a different medium (but of the same project) in a different part of the forum. Also, this project started on the StreamCraft server (www.streamcraftcommunity.com) but when they recently decided to reset their map, I decided to carry on this project in SSP because I'm just so passionate about it. All of that said, I enjoy reading these journals and like to journal myself. And very few of my viewers on YouTube come from this forum, so this seemed like another really cool way to share my Minecrafting with the community. The first couple of posts will be to catch you up on what's happened so far, and then I'll try to update every time I finish a new project. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy it, and may you be happy and well!
What is Sanctuary?
Sanctuary is many things. It's my idea of the ultimate survival base in Minecraft. It has an above ground component, an underground component, and may eventually have a sky base component as well. There are two mythologies involved, one of which we'll get to later. Sanctuary is located is a massive lake that feature waterfall inspired by Niagra Falls, and will eventually be surrounded by tall cliff sides with water falls and overgrowth. It is a city of the future. In this future, the planet experienced a catastrophic event that destroyed most of civilization and much of the planet. A band of survivors stumbled onto this seemingly magical, serene place and chose it as the location where they would build a new society based on peace, love, and construct it in a way that is friendly for the planet.
But actually, Sanctuary is much more personal to me. My wife has been fighting breast cancer since March of 2014. Together we have two sons, 8 years old and 4 years old. We have an amazing family and honestly had a dream life until her diagnosis. Minecraft was already something I loved, but it soon became an escape. About a year ago my wife hit "NED - No Evidence of Disease" and things started returning to normal, but it was short lived. Just a few months later she was diagnosed as metastatic, meaning it spread to multiple parts of her body. She's now stage 4, and terminal. So Sanctuary is literally a sanctuary for me, and well, for anyone else who joins me on the journey. Superman has the
Fortress of Solitude, and I have this place. One day, this cancer will claim my wife's life, so it is not only a place for me to go and relax/keep my brain occupied right now, but it will be a place where I can do that as I try to get over her loss in the future.
So it is a sanctuary both in game mythology as well as in real life. And because of that, what I do here will ultimately be a mixture of technical playing and also artistic expression, if that makes sense. Playing here is like a form of therapy to me. But a lot of great art comes from traumatic events, and I hope that this will also help me in my creative process here at Sanctuary. I guess only time will tell!
Eventually I plan to create a farm for every farmable object in the game, most of which will be located here. But as you'll eventually see, it has to work aesthetically. Everything should look like a natural part of the world or fit nicely into a structure that doesn't look like a big technical build.
Entry #1 - Coop's Origin
I started off with my fellow townspeople building a village in the hill country. The town was called Photog Heights, named after our lord, Streamphotog. There I mingled and worked with some amazing builders. Here are some pictures of my home town:
(An early picture of Photog Heights. Some buildings are still under construction.)
(A close up of town hall from the river. The river was a dry river bed that we added a custom texture to under water. Retainer walls, custom trees and other flora could be found along the shore line. The river was by far my favorite feature of the town.)
(This was my house, based on the mansion from the Scarface movie. I like to build flashy for spawn houses. On the left is a rotunda, and two cars are parked out front including a Batmobile. Palm trees are dotted about the property.)
Living in Photog Heights was a good life. But someone had greater plans for me...
To be continued...
Entry #2 - Visions of Notch & The Pick of Destiny
I started to feel like I was in a building rut. You see, on the previous StreamCraft map, I had a really cool base going. That base was called Rhapsody, and at the time it was my ultimate base project:
(The Rhapsody skyline. Not pictured: Floating island (behind camera) that house a mob farm, a custom forest biome (also behind the camera) which you had to walk through to get to the wall. Opening the main door triggered entrance music and a fireworks show if at night. Also a massive underground area with a crystal cave hub, my ultimate branch mine project (designed to look like a natural cave) and some other stuff. I put approximately 700 hours into that map. I still miss it.)
Rhapsody met with a terrible fate. The map became corrupt one day and unfortunately nobody had a back up. This is an administrative error that was remedied, but the short story is that one day I found I could never return to Rhapsody again. I was devastated. And while I came out of my depression after a couple of weeks, I found myself in a long lasting funk. That is, until...
One night I had a dream. I was above the clouds, far above my home in Photog Heights. And I had a conversation... with Notch! He told me that I was to start my quest anew to build The Ultimate Base. To aid me in this quest, he had hidden a unique and legendary item somewhere in the world - The Pick of Destiny! But that it was located in a dangerous temple, and that I could only obtain it if I had the Courage, the Might and the Skill. After he gave me some vague directions I awoke suddenly and immediately set out on my journey.
After days of searching, I found an underwater structure that looked like a skull built into an underwater cliff side. This was the place I had seen in my dreams.
Inside was a book with instructions to put all of my gear away and take only the gear provided: simple iron armor and an iron sword. I proceeded to the first test...
I walked into a hallway lined with dispensers on either side. Each shot something different: fire charges, arrows, harming and poison potions. This was the test of Courage, and it was terrifying! I timed my movements precisely and managed to make it to the end unscathed. If only I had known that was the easy part...
I stood on a platform and observed the Test of Might. Although this picture looks empty, at the time it was filled with skeletons, including a few standing on balconies I couldn't reach with my sword.
I entered the fray and fought for my life. Arrows flew from all angles and several pierced my armor much to my suffering. I wanted to retreat, but it was a death pit. There was a platform opposite of the one I jumped from, but the lowest spot was a two block high jump. I was in a fight to the death! I barely managed to take down the last of the skeletons in the pit, but realizing I couldn't get to the snipers I ran to a staircase opposite of the skull fixture. There was a lava fall at the end of the stair case that I stood carefully by so as not to burn myself alive. I noticed stone buttons and tried one, only to discover it dispersed of the lava and revealed a secret chamber!
Finally, this was a place of rest. It was a tribute room to the three gods of Minecraft, Jeb to my right, Dinnerbone to my left, and before me...
A massive altar to Notch. In fact, this was the exact image of Notch I had seen in my dream! Chills ran down my spine. There was a sacrificial altar/cauldron before him. In the entrance I had been given not only my gear, but a piece of sacrificial flesh. I tossed it into the cauldron as an offering, and a potion of leaping fell from the ceiling. This was my way out of the Test of Might. I gulped down the potion, thanked Notch and went on my way. I quickly ran past the snipers and hopped to the exit. The Test of Might was complete! But the final, and most difficult test still lay ahead...
The Test of Skill! Skull fixtures vomited lava falls into a lava lake far below, and magically floating platforms of various types and heights stretched out before me. It was by far the most terrifying challenge I had ever been presented. I took each jump carefully, but boldly until finally I made it to the other side with a great sense of pride and achievement!
I walked up a narrow, broken stair case until I reached the prize...
The Mighty Pick Axe of Legend was right before me! I couldn't believe it! There was a book included on the altar, so I took a moment to read it:
"The Legend of the Pick of Destiny
One night at Mojang, in hsi private office, in the darkness of night when all others were asleep, the Minecraft God emerged from his newer creations to commit one last act of blessing onto the Minecraft world. He forged a pick axe to end all pick axes. He ensured that ti would mine faster than any other pick created ever or since, that it would be enchanted with Silk Touch, and that it would never break, even after the burden of a billion blocks and regardless of what its durability meter said.
He then buried it deep in the desert of a random server, where it was discovered by a great builder who went on to build an epic base. But the base was left incomplete when the map became corrupt. Notch intervened to save this player, his friends, and The Pick of Destiny.
It became obvious to Notch that the first location for The Pick Axe of Legend was far too easy, and so he created a far more devious and worthy challenge, The Temple of Destiny, to ensure that the player who obtained The Pick of Destiny would be truly worthy of fulfilling its prophecy. That perhaps, one day a player would have the Heart, the Might, and the Courage to uncover it.
He laid The Pick of Destiny to rest here in this chamber, and further foretold that he (or she) who possessed this pick axe would become the most handsome, most interesting, most important Minecrafter of all times. This is because this player would build the most epic base of all times.
The Pick of Destiny has chosen YOU, Coop_Dizzle! Now go forth... fulfill the prophecy as you once were, and become a Minecraft Legend!"
Needless to say, I was stunned, but pumped all at the same time! I had obtained The Pick of Destiny! I exited through the nether portal and began planning how on earth I could dutifully follow Notch's orders to build the most epic base of all times. Compared to the Minecraft greats, how could I even begin???
To be continued...
OOC: Entry No. 2, everything in there was made and filmed in Survival for the purposes of a Let's Play episode. It took a month to finished the temple, with a little help from some friends, and about 3 days of filming/editing. =^) I just thought I'd note that OOC since that's something highly unlike what you'll read in other journals. Next part is coming soon. I hope you're enjoying it so far, though!

Entry #3 - The Cave
After some thought I arrived at a vision of a city emerging from a lake, surrounded by cliff sides. I tried to think of something that would be very different from Rhapsody, but ultimately Rhapsody represented what I was truly passionate about building: a city style base within a wall, with a custom biome, an underground component and possibly a sky component. This new vision was how I could take it up to the highest level I could imagine. It would be Rhapsody, but bigger and better in every since. The next step was to find a good location to begin.
I couldn't find anywhere with cliff sides that stretched in a 360 radius, and certainly not on the scale I was after. I wanted the cliff sides to be just visible within a 16 chunk render distance in every direction from the center of the area. I came to the conclusion that to achieve that, I would have to build it myself. But I did find an area with a really nice cliff side that covered at least a small part of the radius. I decided that was as good as it was going to get. So now I had to establish myself there. I created a nether portal for quick traveling and then chose to set my bed into a natural looking cave. There wasn't one that I particularly liked, so I dug into the side of the cliff side and made one myself. This was my first home at Sanctuary:
Actually, I started with just the pathway to the cave entrance. This was the pathway finished, but when the cave was only just being carved out. A wooden bridge allows you to cross over a water fall.
And here was my bed, on a small platform surrounded by water. My build style for this is heavily influenced by GoodTimesWithScar. The inside of the cave was quite chilly, so I lit a small fire close by to keep me warm at night.
Entry #4 - Epic Chest Room!
Oddly enough, in Rhapsody I never got to make my ultimate chest room. I was just starting that project when the world was lost. So I decided that would be the first big project I tackled for Sanctuary, since all of the farms to come would feed into it anyway.
I chose to run with a design that one of the ZipCrowd guys had presented. I wanted to be able to sort nearly every item in the game. Although this chest room doesn't do that, it comes close. I went with a modified version that Impulse presented on the Moonlight server some time ago, in which he simply replaced the original sorting system for his sorting circuit.
(A shot of the redstone on one of three sides.)
(A nearly finished design. Since then I have labeled all of the chests that have been assigned an item, and made some tweeks to the aesthetics. Remember the water you see falling down on the glass corners. That will be important to the mythology later on.)
As usual, I underestiamted the scale of this project. But by the end of it I had an epic chest room that did what I wanted it to do. Now I would never have to manually sort anything... ever again. At least not on this map! ;^) Although this marked the project as being basically complete, I continue to make tweaks and additions both to the functionality and aesthetics of this room.
Entry #5 - 3,300+ Blocks of TNT!
Now that I had a place to call home and an impressive storage system, it was time to start preparing the land for the lake to come. First I had to cut down the hundreds of dark oak trees in the area. Grindy work like that is a pain and a time sink, but it pays off later when you have to make a bunch of chests. There was a large hill located in the middle of the area that I knew I'd have to clear, and TNT seemed like a good candidate to get the job done. But to do that I was going to need a mob farm. I went to the spawn chunks and for about 3-4 weeks I worked on constructing Snocrash's mob sphere:
(The spawning pads were quite intricate to reproduce)
(a close up of the killing platform and item transportation that used over 1,200 hoppers, and the beginnings of the storage system.)
(The finished farm. It worked great in 1.8, but failed in the 1.9 snapshots and hasn't been great since. I always intended to go back and build a structure around it, but after a month I was sick of working on it. But it did make a ton of gunpowder!)
Pretty soon I was mass producing gun powder. I'm still not sure if TNT was the best way to go. It was, in itself, very time consuming to collect the materials, craft and, especially, to place over such a huge area.
Several of the strips in the middle were the top of pillars of TNT that extended down to about Y=40. I ran out of energy to make all of those as pillars. You can see where a creeper nearly ruined my entire operation. But oh man, the final explosion was INCREDIBLE! Watching all of the TNT go off and the landscape being so suddenly and dramatically changed was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in survival Minecraft, although I'm not a destructive personality. I suppose it's difficult to explain. But here was the after math...
Needless to say, there was a lot of cleaning up and manual labor that still had to be done. But I was definitely off to a good start! =^)
wow!...wow!!!!!! HOLY **** this was all on SURVIVAL!!!! that's impossible... but the story was great as well as those inventions!! i will be waiting for your next entry.

Entry # 6 - The Lake of Hope
Once I finished tearing down the rest of the hill and flattening the area, I had to decide how to go about creating a custom lake bed. I had a vague vision in my head, but no sense of how to make it a reality. I wracked my brain for weeks trying to come up with a solution, and then finally realized... Making an entirely custom natural terrain is probably much like making any other structure. If you get the foundation right, the rest will fall into place!
Sadly I don't have any great screen shots to share of the process, but it was a long process. What I can tell you is that I wanted three levels to the lake. I wanted water falls inspired by Niagra Falls. And I wanted it to be beautiful and massive, with detailed lake walls and floor. So I set about making a wire frame of sorts, of where the walls of the lake would go. It took a long time to get the technique right, of curving the terrain in a way that looked smooth enough to be pretty, but random enough to be natural. Once I got that done, I went about building up the walls, making sure there was a variety in the depth and texture. I also tried to custom shape and texture the lake bed, but this proved to be too exhausting after everything else I had done. I did shape out the middle of the lake, but only textured a very small (relatively small, I should say) area before finally deciding to fill up that bad boy with water. This was the end result, and while it's not completely done (at least underwater isn't done) I still think it's beautiful!
(A view of one side of the lake. You can see the beginning of a platform for a future building as well.)
Entry # 7 - Sanctuary Tower
I knew that, like in Rhapsody, I wanted an observation tower, only this one would be in a central location. It would have an observation deck that gave me a 360 degree view of the terrain to help me plan the future of the build. I went through several original designs, not liking any of them. Eventually I decided to revive Rhapsody Tower, only this time I would build it bigger and better than before.
Construction began with a temporary platform in the approximate center of the lake on the lowest level. I've always loved the 2-wide piston elevators of old, so I built 2 of them facing in opposite directions. Each one is 66 blocks tall. Then came the shell around the elevators.
From here I added the observation deck, which is the level the elevators kick you off at. The the sides where the elevators are not, aesthetically is looks the same but has trap doors that can be opened for a slime block quick drop.
(I also went ahead and constructed the platform the tower sits upon. It was a tight fit, though. The platform has vents on either side which we can say allows water to flow in. The water flows down into a hydroelectric plant below ground which generates electricity for the tower and the rest of the future city. From there the water flows down to the chest room, which you saw earlier, and from there we say it goes even further down into a water treatment plant to provide drinking water for the city, making this tower not only beautiful and practical for future planning but critical to Sanctuary's infrastructure.)
(See that little guy on top of the tower? That's me. Just to give this build some perspective. =^)
I then added two more floors. The middle floor is a restaurant. We pretend that floors rotate to give you a changing view of the city as you eat. Sadly, the interior design of all three of these floors is incomplete. The top floor serves as a penthouse where I can live and conduct city business from the office. =^)
I also started to build a slime block elevator to take you between the three floors, which works. But originally the elevator was made to take you from the chest room at Y=28 all the way up to the observation deck, and I haven't managed to make that work yet. Although it's a single player world, I'm running it on a server and slime block elevators don't typically do well on there. I need to find a 2-wide design so that it's symmetrical with the rest of the tower, and so far I've had no luck. But so far the tower is coming along really well!
And now you're caught up!
Each time I finish a project and release it on my YouTube channel, I plan to add another entry to this journal. It's been a lot of fun to revisit the long path that's brought us to this point in the Sanctuary project. Now that the lake is finally here, things are going to pick up quite dramatically and I'm really excited for it! If you made it this far, thanks again so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed it! Please let me know what you think! =^)
wow!...wow!!!!!! HOLY **** this was all on SURVIVAL!!!! that's impossible... but the story was great as well as those inventions!! i will be waiting for your next entry.
Thanks so much! Yeah, it took several months, some of which were honestly procrastinating and wrapping my head around how to approach it. I nearly went crazy trying to work on that lake. But now that it's here I feel liberated to build! I was writing the next entry when you posted this, but now everything is caught up. Thanks so much and I'm glad you enjoyed it! =^)
I remember seeing your videos on youtube! Awesome builds!
Thanks so much! My biggest inspirations are GoodTimesWithScar (for his landscaping), Xisumavoid/Mumbo for their general base layout and functionality, and also Sl1pg8tr for his scale. Mostly, if you've seen his old Vanilla SSP, Surviving Sliptopia (seasons 1 and 2), his base The Canvas was a huge inspiration. That's a series worth checking out, even though it's old Minecraft, and even though it was way before he came into his own as a YouTuber. =^) Thanks for reading, and I hope you stick around!
I admire your enthusiasm and your passion. While I don't specifically relate to the personal story you've shared, I do understand what it means to make Minecraft your own personal sanctuary. I only skimmed the content provided so far (I may read it in detail later), but I am intrigued by your approach. It's hard for me to get interested in many MC series enough to follow them (whether that's a video series or journal), but it's possible I will pop into this one more often than not! Thank you for taking a creative approach and showcasing your passion for the game in a fun new way.
Happy hunting!
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
LP series? Not my style! Video series? Closer, but not quite. Survival journal, maybe? That's better. Now in Season 4 of the Legends of Quintropolis Journal (<< click to view)!! World download and more can be found there.

Thanks, Joey_San! Yeah, I admit it's a LOT to read for the first day, but I had several months worth of stuff to catch up on. Hope to see you around again soon! =^)
you're an inspiration to me. i have tried making complex builds in survival but i ran into a problem. though my builds are amazing (well not that amazing) i never really gave them any space, as a result my survival world has poor landscaping and very crowded buildings. i am starting a new survival where i hope to give myself more space. your builds have inspired me to think about the landscape more and be more creative. thanks!!
i was especially amazed by the lake of hope, the monster spawner and the storage.

Wow, Nyscole! You made my whole night! That's exactly why I started sharing my Minecrafting a couple of years ago. If you ever share your work on here (or wherever) please let me know so I can check it out! =^) If you want to see a true landscaping master, check out GoodTimesWithScar on YouTube and find one of his Scarland world tours. It's unbelievable! I hope to get close to his level some day. =^) I hope you'll follow this post and check back later on!
Thank you for sharing. I love your work so far, both the massive scale of it and the aesthetics. And in survival too! Clearly the Pick of Destiny is in good hands
That minecraft gives you strength to get your own sanctuary, that's truly amazing.
I really wish you all the luck off the world man.
About the builds. Just wow. It's truly stunning what you build. The temple was epic. The landscaping, chest room, tower, lake are great. I really love of the idea of a self sustaining base that's looks epic. Because you combine it with a story (With the dream, the temple, the beginning of the sanctuary) it gives much more dept.
I saw a lot of self sustaining bases but not so much did look so good as yours (With the landscaping etc.). Only the one of Etho (His mancave) was epic.
Will definitnely follow this topic. And offcourse get a sub for it. Do you have the youtube link for it? I read somewhere in the topic that you got a let's play/youtube serie of it.
But i missed the link. Keep the good work going. And all in survival! Wow, wow and 100 times wow again!
Thanks so much, ahrandir! I didn't want to spam my YouTube link because I don't want to seem like I'm spamming and I want to respect this genre, so to speak. But my YouTube link is in my signature. Although you might have to scroll down a little bit. Actually, you could just click here. =^)
EDIT: I modified my signature so that my links are visible right away.
I've watched Scarland world tour episode 1 and was impressed. he completely remade the minecraft world with so much aesthetics and everything is so spaced out that you're not overwhelmed with a city of structures, each structure is so unique and fits so perfectly with the environment. thanks for recommending the video.

I subscribed to your channel btw
Scar is the master! And he's an amazing human being as well. =^) Thanks so much for subscribing to my channel! The first episode of Sanctuary as an SSP should be out on Tuesday. I'm thinking of putting together a prologue episode that basically retells what was in this journal, in which case the next big project will come out on Thursday. Look forward to seeing you there! =^)

Entry #8
I completely tore down the slime block elevator that was over 100 blocks tall, and went with a completely different design. Still no luck. That's probably the down side of running the map on a server. But at this point I was getting anxious to start the next big build, a skyscraper that would house the Villager Breeder and Trading Center!
I made a temporary platform on the far east side of the lake and decided it best to complete the interior and technical side before building the exterior shell. I used a Villager Sorting system designed by my good friend Mott Bot (he has a great tutorial on YouTube). It uses minecart rails and is so easy, elegant and effective, it was hard to pass up. Water streams can be bulky and slower. I designed the first floor to start, but quickly chose to have at least two floors worth of villagers. My end goal is to have every possible enchanted book trade in the game. In retrospect, I wish I would've made three floors. As it is, I'll have to get a few villagers with multiple good (or at least acceptable) book trades. The first floor back wall houses several columns of double chests that have been sorted for items you can trade with. In the future, those items will be sent there from other farms or from the chest room automatically. Once that happens I'll go back and label the chests. Here is a view of the first floor:
The design for the second floor was similar, except the back wall of chests is instead used for additional villagers. There are six on each wall with a total of 28 slots. Not quite enough for all of the villagers I wanted, but it should still work out pretty well I imagine. Plus, I figure I can always trade out villagers for better ones if I'm willing to do a little leg work. Which I am. =^)
I installed a simple minecart elevator at the entrance, neatly hidden away, to get between floors. Of course I would need a villager breeder to populate the trading center, so I got to work. I decided on a new design by Unarybit, who is the man when it comes to villager related technical projects. He has a showcase and world download on YouTube. Look for "Unarybit 1.9 Villager Breeder". I made the villager breeding cell and transportation system accessible on the third floor. I didn't screen shot it, but the 4th floor gives you access to the breeding cell (to feed the villagers) and the 5th floor gives you access to the artificial village. Here is the third floor:
Not visible in this shot is that the rail splits two ways. A level on the left wall allows you to switch the track to send them either into the trading center, while the other option sends them to the nether portal. I've found transporting villagers through the nether to be a very easy way to move them around, especially when you need to transport them vertically as well as horizontally. This way I can easily get villagers into place for the future wheat/carrot/potato/beet root farm, as well as a future iron farm. Once those projects are done, most of the additional villagers will be used to populate Sanctuary. But we're a long ways off from that point.
It seems like a pretty great system to me, but I feel like it's missing something... Perhaps if I pray to Notch he will give me the answers, but you just never know. He's so inconsistent.
My apologies for not taking better progress screen shots in this one. I had actually made this and these were potential thumbnail pics for the video, and I'd made it all before the original post on this thread. I'll try to do better on the next one. In fact, the next entry should be really interesting if things go well this next week. =^)
In the mean time, do you think it's grand enough? If you could change it, what would you do to make it better?
Thanks so much for reading! May you be happy and well! =^)

Thanks so much, ahrandir! I LOVE to hear that! =^) If you have any other ideas for tutorials I can do related to landscaping, please let me know because after those four I'm pretty much out of ideas. lol I'm still not 100% sure where you'll enter the base from. Next entry/episode we start working on the cliff sides and hopefully get to do the skyscraper that hides the trading center. I really would like the "guest" portal to be in the forest on top of the cliffs so you walk up to the cliff edge and see the city from there, but it's going to take so long to get to that point. Just the little bit I have done now ran through probably... 5-6 double chests of stone? I only have a couple of double chests left, and it doesn't cover much. Anyway, thanks again for reading and also for checking out my channel! <3 May you be happy and well!
Fortress of Solitude, and I have this place. One day, this cancer will claim my wife's life, so it is not only a place for me to go and relax/keep my brain occupied right now, but it will be a place where I can do that as I try to get over her loss in the future.

EDIT: subscribed.
Thanks, Tuts36! And thanks for subbing to the thread! I can't wait to show you guys what's around the corner! =^)
