I am building a mob drop that is up 40 blocks. I built four 40 block towers and on one tower I put a ladder all the way up. I can climb, and stop (using left shift), but once I get up there I keep falling when I walk to the edge and try to go down ?
You do not need to press any keys to descend, if that is the problem. If not, it would be useful to send some kind of image/diagram, so that we could see where the problem might be.
It is just a single column of cobblestone 40 blocks high. I can climb to the top, but when I step onto the top block, turn around and try to go down, I fall every time.
Just put up a smackwall in front of the ladder. In minecraft, if it's not a slime block then it has the inertia-dampening characteristics of, say, vibranium (the material that Captain America's shield is made out of).
A Smackwall is a wall right infront of the ladder. That way, if you miss the ladder, you will smack into it and go down the ladder smoothly. I have never heard the term "Smackwall" being used before, but I think this is what DuhDerp means.
I was going to suggest a smackwall too (albeit in less colourful terminology. DuhDerp has invented something). It doesn't need to go down the whole 40 blocks; it only needs one block right across from the top of the ladder, and one block up from (so you hit your knees on it).

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
I suppose you could put it at foot level, but I find myself having the annoying habit of jumping onto things. When I do smackwalls, I prefer to put them at head level (making the term kinda obvious, heh). I also prefer to do the two blocks on either side as well, that way, I can only ever go down the ladder relatively straight instead of accidentally catching it from an angle and maybe veering off into a freefall.
Good thought. Make the wall 3 wide and 2 high for complete safety.

Is there a "trick" to this ?

Yeah, I don't really know what to put here.

Well, you could make a pool at the bottom to break your fall if you can't get onto the ladder every time.

Stay facing towards the ladder when you fall off, it helps me. if you fall you can press the w key to move forward and contact the ladder.
Oh youth, guided by the servant of the goddess, unite earth and sky, and bring light to the land.
Oh youth, show the two whirling sails the way to the light tower... and before you a path shall open, and a heavenly song you shall hear.

What is a "smackwall".
Thanks for the idea about a pool of water at the bottom. That will at least save me.

A new term has been coined! I will begin using it immediately.
