Remember is water, so all of the sand is adjacent to water. It could be used for either reeds or cactus.
For at least minimal lighting I would probably place a torch where the dirt block is diagonally in from the corner most tree. Overshadowing of the tree's could make the plants underneath grow sporadically unless you religiously harvested the trees(assuming that this is made outside).

Reeds (Sugar cane) need to be placed on sand or dirt that is adjacent to water.
