In the middle of a thunderstorm approximately 20 skeleton knights spawned around me. I was under the impression that they had to originally come from horses, and then three others would additionally spawn. These didn't come from any horses and there were so many I could only run and hide.
Ah, yep, already read that. According to this there is a low chance of it and they arise from horses (which I said these didn't) and that three others will spawn.
I said 20 spawned and they -did not- come from horses, and wanted to know if anyone else had had this happen. The lightning struck and they appeared. No original horsies involved.
Wow, guess that's what I get for jumping to a conclusion. Sorry bout that. I don't see anything related to this in the bug tracker so it's probably a rare glitch. You sure there wasn't a horse, maybe in the mouth of a surface cave that you didn't see?
One pack could be explained as the lightning striking and generating the trap horse out of camera view, but close enough that it was instantly triggered by the player's presence. But 5 packs of 4 (to get to 20)..... just wow.
See some ended up in the water, one in my garden, a couple near my daughter's house, and because I hadn't seen them before I went to get a lead and when I returned there were an additional 12 or so in the plains area where we have our little settlement. All shooting at me! Can it be a glitch or something? My husband was working in a plains area north of us and nothing happened over there. (We're in Realms)
It sounds like you just had a particularly bad thunderstorm. I don't know if anyone can legitimately say if this should/shouldn't/will/won't happen again, as 1.9 is still relatively new, and test sample size is likely going to be too low to have any real meaning.

Right. And from reports they are fairly common during a thunderstorm...and those are a little more common than I would like.
I had my first thunderstorm in 1.9 (SP) a few days ago and I was outside checking my lighting circuit upon my base peak, when I turned round there was 5 of these Skeleton Trap horses dotted around in the water. I've only seen the skeleton riders on the horses when I got close enough to the original horse to activate it, but I haven't seen them so far in the way you described. Maybe its something to do with realms ...? Anyway, I have had two more storms since then and four more horses but still nothing like your scenario, but i'll certainly watch out for it.
Same thing happened to me on an easy mode non pvp server. Another player was nearby, but not doing anything that maybe could have affected this (building a castle). I was flattening the land for the construction, when I noticed a skeletal horse near a corner. I decided to tame it, but as soon as I approached it a horrible sound started looping and it got hit by lightning. Rather than spawning 5 horses though, it spawned 20. They also were immune to sword hits (shields blocked them though), and the only thing that harmed them was a bow and arrow. I retreated to my base and closed the doors and logged off. When I came back on, they were still there. Eventually I had to resort to using a lot of TNT, which finally killed them off. However, it also destroyed my 3 year old base. I wonder if this is a rare glitch or something...
Has anyone else had this happen?

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
