Gather enough Cobblestone to build a sizable wall around your home, so you can have some open space for yourself, your crops and your animals. Make sure to build it spider-proof, Endermen will still get in but you can just run to water/avoid eye contact/kill them.
1)the fastest way to find diamonds is to dig straight down.
2)coal, shmoal, you can't ever have too much wood.
3)collect resources by the stackful. The more you have, the more stuff you can do at night while cooped up in your safe house. More importantly, the less frequently you have to trek off to faraway biomes.
4)When chopping down a small tree type you don't yet have available, break the leaves first and make sure to pick up the saplings. If you pull a reverse Jonny Appleseed and just let the leaves decay after pulling out all the wood, the saplings could end up on the ground long enough to despawn.

I'd like to point at that you should only ever do this upon first starting or not having any experience or valuables on you. Make sure to gather a stack of wood planks, some coal to have a few starting torches, and a bit of food. You then use blocks to get up and down the shaft. With this method, you have a good chance of dying.
More tips!: 1.) Always carry a bucket of water, they help immensely with heights. 2.) Have a generally organized hotbar and inventory to save time. 3.) For the first few nights until you decide what and where you'll build, make your shelter underground. 4.) Write down coordinates for everything of interest you find and all builds you make. 5.) When exploring caves or abandoned mine-shafts, never get too greedy. Drop off your items and then return. 6.) Making underwater builds will give you peace of mind. 7.) Find carrots and melons for alchemy (I prefer carrots over bread for a food source). 8.) Always, I mean always, be wary of where you run. Is there a drop? Falling hurts. 9.) When building big, triple check light levels. 10.) Play your way, and have fun doing it!

Well, the best forested biome is the Roofed Forest. It has oak, birch and dark oak trees, the latter of which you can easily build on. Dark oak trees also drop apples and grow fast. (But only if the saplings are put in a 2x2 square.)

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
Oak tree pit in my base, where I can harvest 24/7 without mob intrusions.
Once I have basic tools, a dead pig or two, some torches and a couple of oak saplings (has to be basic oak), I start digging a 6x6x8 underground chamber. Floor is a 4x4 dirt square surrounded by cobblestone at the edge. On the dirt floor, oak saplings and torches (8 each) arranged in a checkerboard pattern. The limited height prevents branching in oak, making harvesting really easy and fast, and the torches at sapling level keep the farm in a high grow rate.
It solves two early game problems at a single blow: wood and food. Fully grown, the pit cranks out a full stack of raw oak at a time, and the leaves produce plenty of saplings and apples. I usually get that going even before I start farming, by the second night at the latest.
A hit-and-run tactic can be used on all types of mobs when fighting them, especially creepers. Just run at them, hit them, then run back, then run at them and hit them again, and rinse and repeat until it dies.
A tip for mining: Make a hole in the place where you are mining and use it as a place to bank ores/supplies, also include a bed, furnaces, crafting table, and chests with extra resources like torches, wood, pickaxes, etc. Make sure to go back to this place every once in a while to bank your stuff in case you die.

I'm sorry, but what is this topic for again? If they aren't tips for you, then what are they for? The general public?

Oh yeah, speaking of treehouses. At some point you're probably gonna want to add on or change something and you're bound to have a tree that needs trimming back or replanting somewhere else (if not, you're either lucky or willing to just live with the design problem). Once you have it as you like, consider replacing the leaves with player-placed leaf blocks--these will not decay if you accidentally cause the removal of a key log block that triggers decay.
The above probably isn't much of a problem for anything but jungle giants (apparently they generate with too many leaves and not enough wood, so anything that causes a block update to a leaf block will trigger decay), but falling through your base floor is just as annoying anywhere else.

It is worth noting that all 2x2 trees grow faster because any of the four saplings can grow into a tree (the type of tree has no effect), hence if you need a lot of wood it is best to use 2x2 saplings, provided here is a 2x2 variant (dark oak, spruce, and jungle; the latter also isn't very practical to grow as small trees due to the lower sapling drop rate). For normal oak trees you can plant them right next to each other to grow "walls" of wood since they do not have any space restrictions (specifically, wood and leaves do not block their growth); you may want to limit their height to 8-9 blocks to avoid big oaks, which can be time-consuming to harvest (but can have far more wood and leaves).

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Build your first house into a mountain/hill until you can gather enough materials to build a proper house. ( Or just expand your in-ground home! )

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Underwater entrance to you base. Only you can get in or out, aside from pets, who will just teleport.
