GMPax is right. The phases of the moon are cause by our angle to it and the sun. Depending on the angle we see more or less of the bright side where the sun is shining on it and the part that is missing is actually the dark side (not to be confused with the FAR side which is the part we can't see because it never faces us). We can't see it because it isn't lit by the sun. The only time the earth casts a shadow on the moon is during a lunar eclipse. It was a good thought, though. Had me going until I read the replies. Actually, there is still a contradiction because if the moon is square, shouldn't the phases show as rectangles?

Has nothing to do with the planet casting a shadow on the moon. That's called a lunar eclipse.
But, to be fair, it in fact doesn't make sense that the moon is square but its night-side/day-side border appears to be round...
o-o So many people truly believe that the moon's phases are caused by earth's shadow? Huh... I wonder how many of you think the earth is flat. Anyway just look at the shadow on minecraft's moon. At either half-moon the shadow is more square than round, and at either gibbous the shadow is crecent-shaped. Is the minecraft world changing shape constantly? XD

I think if the moon was square and flat it would either be totally illuminated (if Minecraftia was between the sun and moon) or completely dark (the moon between Minecraftia and the sun). It's similar to holding up a sheet of paper to a light source and you are Minecraftia.
Edit: Actually I doesn't even need to be a square, as long as it's flat you'd get the same effect.
The Minecraft Moon is a cube. What we take to be phases are just patterns on it's six sides. It changes which face shows to the world while it is under the flat Minecraft world.
Notice how we only ever see five of the faces. What is on the sixth?
it's flat and never ending(If the farlands are still there...), which means the minecraft world is really just a Plane, not a circle, doesn't it...?
Exactly! If the Minecraft world infinitely generates around you, there can be no definite shape. You could explore in a way that the chunks generate in a circle, square, etc.

So then you actually define what shape the minecraft world is, so it CAN be circle, or square, or even a pentagon for you odd 5-sided-shape lovers
. . .
The Minecraft world isn't round though, it's perfectly flat [Well, not curved]
You can't tell that though. If you were to walk all the way around the earth you wouldn't notice anything. And don't tell me that the world is infinte because if you were to run minecraft and keep holding the "w" key your computer would crash and therefor e the minecraft planet is a least 3 times bigger then earth.
I think the more important question is since the moon is closer than the edge of the map, how can it orbit in the first place? It should intersect the map at dawn and dusk.
Greetings Druid. Do your fellow druids believe the world is round?
Mind****'d.
Get over it. :l
