I usually build small towns. I make myself a large mansion which kind of sets the theme for the surrounding area.Generally there will be some small cookie-cutter town houses that I make for guests and just plain looks.
I generally like to incorporate my houses into the landscape. Like right now my house is built into a hill on either side of the river, and between them is a hallway/bridge made of glass. It looks really cool.
I also like the idea of being mob safe, so walls are cool.
. . . Oh god this is a toughy.
I never can stick to any sort of house. It's weird. I've tried above-ground houses like cottages, i've tried above-ground houses that sorta evolve over time, i've tried making an air-bourne house, i've tried making a tower sort of house, i've tried making a mountain house, i've tried making a cave house, I can never stick to them, ever.
But my favourite is a homey cottage house that leads into a basement that's the 'actual base'.
Or a mushroom house that does just that.
A somewhat small, cozy cabin in the middle of a forest. Sometimes I like just making an exposed cave in the side of a mountain my home though, for more of a "survivalist" feel.
I have one world I'm going to be in for a LONG time. I build a few medium sized buildings and a lot of smaller buildings, making houses and towns and such. I was going to build a castle in the center of everything but I kinda lost the dedication and it turned into being a fairly large structure, but not as big as it could've been. I'm still proud of it and think it's epic! I think having more space inside it would be useless. I already have a waterfall surrounded by lapis and a huge furnace/chest room inside so I'm good with it xD And a little tower to look out over everything from the top :3
I'm thinking about making a large underground base like some of you have mentioned. How do you guys do it? Just dig straight down and make sort of a house but underground? Any tips would be awesome!
I like to find awesome mountains then build towers on them. It's usually pretty easy to light up the mountain quickly (though it depends on how big it is) so I don't have to worry about monsters much. I also make minecart tracks down to a mineshaft at the base. If there's water nearby, I'll build a dock. Once I found a mountain with floating islands. I built a log cabin on the hill then a bridge to my farm on the floating island.
My houses are typically elaborate, but inglorious hobbit holes that are hidden from overworld view. I usually make them quite hospitable on the inside, due to the fact there's no sunlight coming in.
I also like the idea of being mob safe, so walls are cool.

As in, a house that looks like a really huge tree.
But before I get the necessary resources to do that, I'll make a small, cozy brick house to live in.
Its also nice if you can find a deep vally with mountains on all sides...
Or a river house.
