Hi everyone, I'd like to propose to you the Civilization Challenge.
Basically, it's like this.
You create a completely new map, establish a settlement, and continue advancing your civilization. There's no real winner, but it's always fun seeing how grand your civilization becomes! Pictures are nice. You must choose from the following and opptionally (must recommended) challenges.

Will you take the challenge
Edit: Although I originally thought this would be fine to post, conflict always stir.
Let's iron out some challenges that can be taken the wrong way.
China - China today is viewed indifferently. Many associate China with factories for cheap production.
Why I associated factories into the Challenges is because China, up until World War I, was agricultural. Afterwards, they began to industrialize. They went from the massive farmer's country to the massive industrial nation that rivals all other nations that had insutrialized decades before. It's amazing in my view.
Germany-Germany's past actions always have altered the way people view Germany.
Germany's Arsenal of Weapons Challenge was suppose to simulate the sudden indutrialization and militarization by Germany decades before World War I. This amazing sweep of technology and sophistication makes Germany admirable since few countries have replicated or done the same as fast as Germany.
Why did you choose this weapon-achievement for Germany? Did you know, that we don´t have this super-killer-bangboombang-weapons they have in the USA or anywhere? And, btw, we had just had no army for a few years... So why do you choose this achievement?
i made a new account cause of that curse thing just to take this challenge :tongue.gif:
i'll do it with japan and do all challenges, screens will be posted in the future.
Germany was once a ununified land made up a small weak kingdoms. Once the other nations started industrializing, Germany became unified and Industrialized in a matter of years. Their army and industry grew.
The achievment was centered off that industrialization. Germany's army became massive. The weapons thing (as also mentioned in Asyria) was to show their military might BACK THEN. Not now.
Edit: I hope you, and everyone, knows this.
These challenges are pretty much centered on the achievments of nations and empires in the past. For example, the United States had the most vast network of railroads. Japan is a leading figure in electronics... hence, redstone... Minecraft's electronics.
Because these achievments are centered off historical eras and events, their purpose is to make you go through the glory and difficulty of that civilization. This isn't some sort of "this civilization is evil so I made them this achievment". Every nation and civilization should be idolized to their contributions to the World. Which, it seems every civilizations has a positive and negative contribution to make. No one is innocent, so please don't assume I'm dumping guilt on one nation.
If you take a personal offence in anything I'd be happy to explain what historic event motivated me to place that achievment.
So do you have any thoughts on what exactly constitutes a "city"? And what does it mean to "control" an area of land?
If you look on a map, Minecraft creates large pockets of land. These "Pockets" are pretty much continents in my eyes. Normally, they are pretty huge. Which is why some countries have that challenge.
Cities are really how you define it. They obviously cannot be two buildings. They should be sohpsiticated with roads or houses and multipurpose buildings. Obviously, you might want them lit up for protection if you choose to play on a difficulty.
I´ll make Germany, but I won´t make an arsenal... Your argument reminds me of the NS-Regime, sorry!
The challenge seems cool, I have a reason to build big factories now :smile.gif:
That's fine. it's only a secondary challenge, which as I stated, does not have to be completed. It's only just something that Germany went through to increase their glory.
Ypou could add Polynesia to it :smile.gif: They would give a nice alternative control bonuses as they used to be an island nation (and the easter island statues could be nice to make as monuments)
Have to say, this is a nice & fresh new challenge.
Thanks.
I'm afraid I do not know much about Eastern Civilizations and Empires. I did alot about the West, but I only know China, India, Russia, and Japan in the East.
But if you could create your own template of the primary and secondary challenges, I'd be glad to post it up. :smile.gif:
Glory? No, the opposite. Weapons never lead to glory.
In World War I they were not militarizing for the same reasons as World War II.
And weapons are never idolized, but the fact that Germany rose from weak kingdoms and rose to a unified nation that nearly instantly rivaled power with it's neighbors is amazing. it's probably the first time an event like that has occured, except for the United States. However, the United States was not an instant industrialization.
Germany should be proud of its ability to unify.... History isn't exactly known for unifying...
Why did you choose this weapon-achievement for Germany? Did you know, that we don´t have this super-killer-bangboombang-weapons they have in the USA or anywhere? And, btw, we had just had no army for a few years... So why do you choose this achievement?
"Germans seem to really like starting [stuff], bit it's cool cause it's not like they ever win."
"Okay, Germans started up World War I, than they was like 'Whoops my bad!'
We said it's okay, then a couple years later they start a world war again."
If you know what this is from, you've made it far enough in the song to be a bad person.
Isn't the primary objective for Greece kind of weak? I mean, most of the other countries have you creating multiple cities, but for Greece you only need to build one relatively simple building. Why not up the challenge and have the player build the entire Acropolis on the top of a hill in or by Athens?
Ninja edit: I forgot to mention, I really do like this challenge.

Well, I wasn't too sure what Greece should have as a primary challenge. I don't want to dictate how the city is built (as an acropolis does dictate that). The Parthenon is a massive structure that does exmplify the Golden Age of Athens... pretty much the height of Science, Math, Architecture, and Art in Greece. It represents such achievments in that important era for Western Civilization.
Building the entire Acropolis would be difficult... What would it include? No one knows how it is shaped unless researched. Parthenon is a very classic example and is (or should be) well known.

I can see why you're having problems with Greece, since you're focusing on ancient Greece. Ancient Greece wasn't ever a unified country. Rather, it was a collection of city-states that had a tenuous peace among them at the best of times. You could just focus on specific city-states.
I can appreciate why you don't want to dictate how people build their cities; I know I wouldn't want some random guy on the internet telling me what to do for no reason. On the other hand, having a secondary challenge (controlling five islands) be more difficult that the primary objective kind of makes me scratch my head. Granted, "control" is a very broad term that could mean anything from building a giant penis in the middle of five islands to making cities on five islands. I'm not knocking how vague it is, since that what makes the results of challenges like these interesting. I'm just saying that when a secondary challenge is potentially exponentially harder than the primary challenge, there's something wrong.
While I'll agree that the Parthenon is by far the most recognized structure of Ancient Greece, it by no means exemplifies "the Golden Age of Athens." Yes, it is a wonderful example of the marriage of math and architecture. (Fun fact: because it is so huge it's actually subtly curved to make it look straight, since long, straight structures seem to curve in certain perspectives.) That said, if you're looking for what really highlights the height of Athens, you should look at the Agora, specifically the Stoa of Attalos. It's a fantastic building, not to mention quite a bit more complex than the Parthenon.
Yes, building the Acropolis would take a bit of research, but that's part of the fun, at least for me. Learning about the history of a place and why it's built how it is can be fascinating. Regardless, you'd have to do some research on any of the buildings listed in the challenge. Even if it isn't a specific building you'd still need to do some research to get the style right (I'm looking at you "have a sophisticated factory in Berlin).
In all fairness, though, this is your challenge to design and run. That was just my two cents.
Nice work, if I wasn't already building my own (fantasy) civ I'd probably jump on this. I'd like to propose Australia(Canberra) as one of the civs with the following challenges
Primary - One major city on each coast of a land mass and one on a separate (smaller) island
Secondary - Sydney Opera House in Sydney
Secondary - Coober Pedy (South Australia)
Tertiary - Uluru/Ayers Rock in the center of a desert. You'll have to scale this one down since it's over 300meters high. I suggest going for a sea level - top of skybox scale which would make it nearly 2km across at the widest
Tertiary - Great Barrier Reef
Edit: I guess I should explain my thinking behind the Tertiary challenges. I figured that having some of the natural elements of the civilization in the build but since they aren't actually part of the civ, just part of country, that they couldn't be secondary as people didn't actually build them
When I find myself in time of trouble/Mother Mary comes to me/Speaking words of wisdom/If you have stuff on you that you want to keep/make a chest and put everything into it./Now press F3
write down the coordinates that it tells you/Die and respawn/Write down the new coordinates/Walk to the first set of coordinates/pick up your stuff and walk back to the second set/Let it be
