I'm going to assume that you use Windows. If you use mac, then get virtual windows and continue. Or just get a PC.
I'm also going to assume that you actually went to minecraft.net, registered an account, and bought the game for 20 euros. If you didn't, you're either doing it wrong or you're pirating the game. While Mojang DOES NOT have a huge problem with this (the creator, Notch, is actually a supporter of free internet and open information, including game piracy), not having a premium, paid account on minecraft could pose problems. If you pirated the game, or didn't register an account and pay for the game, then do so right now. It's a very good game, worth the money, and if you don't, problems like this happen. And there's no way to fix them, at least that I know of.
First off, I don't know if you're running Minecraft "in browser" or not. If you're not running it "in browser", then you downloaded the "client", called "Minecraft.exe". This is not the actual game, it is merely a shortcut that connects your computer to another file, which is stored in %appdata% on your computer under the name ".minecraft".
Your first step is to delete this. If it's not there, then skip this step.
Next, go to Minecraft.net, and under Play Minecraft, click "download".
Then, click the button under "Minecraft for Windows that says "Minecraft.exe (270 KB).
After the download finishes, put Minecraft.exe on your desktop.
Log in, and it will download the game files automatically.
Create a single-player world and try again.
If all this fails, go to java.com and download the latest version of java. Minecraft uses java to run, so if your java is not up to date, this might be a problem.
If all of THIS fails, I don't know what to tell you. Get a new computer, I guess.
(Or maybe you're not holding the mouse down for long enough. Cutting a block down might take a few seconds.)
OH, and one more thing. You guys who were hating on her, she's still new to minecraft. It's punks like you all who give the minecraft community a bad name. This is not 4chan, trolling is not ok in this community. The OP has a problem, and you all just pick on her. It's like schoolyard bullying, and it just makes me sick. Cut it out.

The browser option of play in my opinion steals from the fun of the game
at the main page go to download and download the minecraft file
there was less bugs and your game runs much smoother.
OT: Stop Trolling.
