I thought you could plant mushrooms on dirt, with enough space, in a dark area, and put bonemeal on them you could grow huge mushrooms. For some reason, I can't put bonemeal on them like other plants. Am I missing something?

They need to have a space above them of like 6 blocks open

Test it outside with no trees and see what happens. Did you turn the bone into bonemeal? Did you right-click? You know, this shouldn't be in Survival, and I would've gone to wiki.

I hate it when someone answers the question and everyone else says the same thing.
As someone who has Googled enough computer error messages... let me tell you.
It's better to have twenty people repeat the same answer twenty times; than to have twenty people repeat the same question twenty times, with no one answering.

Then there's this:
Yeah that's so true for me! Last night I was trying to do the same thing this guy was asking trying to make a mushroom grow but I tried pretty much everything everyone has been posting on here (except for puting a torch right beside it) and still nothing. I made sure the room is completely open for 5x5x5 for a red mushroom, tried using bonemeal nothing happened, made the room a little bigger and did the same thing and still nothing and a few other things.
I found something on the wiki last night on huge mushrooms and it said something like bonemeal worked to make on the 1.8 minecraft but since the update it seems it doesn't work now with bonemeal or something I think it said which kind of makes me upset because I was going to do this before the update and now that I finally did it is it too late I wonder?
I tried it outside and it did work. It must have been my room size. I'll play around with it a bit more. Thanks for all the answers!
Yeah I got mine to grow too outside with bonemeal so I guess it does still work but it won't grow inside my room I made for it. I made a lot more room big enough to make one inside (7x6x10) and it still won't grow. Do I still need more space or will it just not grow underground or in a cave? I notice the dirt doesn't grow grass so I guess do mushrooms not grow giant underground either maybe?
Just figured out that lighting was way more important than I even knew and the space required has to be pretty big as the mushrooms take up a lot of space

This looks resolved, but just in case someone comes along with the same issue, there is a design in youtube that builds the perfect environment to grow and harvest giant mushrooms in dirt outside
It looks like a house with glass walls, has a water flow below to collect the mushrooms into a chest, and the perfect height to cause lighting that permit growth while stopping hostile mobs from spawning and forcing the mushrooms to grow at an easy to harvest farm.
search for “giant mushroom farm” and you should find the video that meets my description.

They used to pop out of the ground in direct sunlight in Beta, but not since 1.0. They do still pop out if you put a torch right next to them.
