yeah, but you can't do anything, you would have to find lots of animals too because you can't farm them. you need wood for all tools so no cobblesonte for you either.
Technically you could get wheat by finding an NPC village, then you could breed animals and make food.
I don't know why everyone's saying it's difficult. Surviving without wood is incredibly easy. Simply dig a hole, go into it, cover the top, and don't ever move. That way, one won't lose any hunger and mobs can't attack oneself.
I would look for an NPC village with farms (Wheat, carrot, potato) and a blacksmith (you now have a furnace).
You would need to get some sticks somehow. If you're lucky, you get some in the starter chest, or find some in another chest. Otherwise, you'll need to kill witches to get initial sticks. From there, you can either kill more witches for sticks or make a fishing rod and fish for sticks (you'll need 2 sticks to start with though). Hopefully, you would fish up more than 2 sticks before it breaks, and likely a few more fishing rods (even enchanted ones).
All of this would be very tedious. You would probably want to use some of the first sticks to make a pick (if you didn't get one in the starter chest) and get some cobble to make half slabs so you can make a mob farm to slowly (and automatically) accumulate more sticks.
A big focus would be on getting a thriving village set up, this would be challenging, but possible I think. Then you could trade surplus food or rotten flesh/sugar cane etc for emeralds that you could then use to buy tools. Once you get to there, you're pretty much set. Basically infinite supply of tools without needing to use any wood at all. Zombie sieges may be an issue though :-)

Why would use need sticks? Why not do what I said to do in the post before yours?
Technically, yes that way you would "survive" in the strictest definition of the term. But I don't think that would be a satisfying experience for very long. I suppose I was trying to describe how you could not only survive, but thrive in Minecraft without using any wood (i.e. Logs, Wood blocks, half slabs, stairs, etc).
If you wanted to formalise it, the rules would need to be made a bit more clear. Can you use wooden blocks or fence related material that appear in the environment? Or are you not allowed to use anything that you would normally collect with an axe?

I think you can get cobble by making creepers blow up stone. you can get sticks from witches to get initial tools. you could trade with villagers to make new tools or make a witch farm. crafting tables can be gotten from villages. it would be difficult, but not impossible.

I know everyone else wants you to click their dragons...
What you could do is use console commands to give yourself a crafting table (I know that's cheating, but I am going somewhere with this). Then, you could punch creepers to death and grab at some sand and make TNT. Then, you can blow up rocks if lava is in a convenient enough spot to light things on fire and set off the TNT. Then, you could build a furnace and power it with coal with the blown up rocks. With that you can make iron, and use blown up gravel [flint] and use that to light more TNT. You could survive with only one console command and no wood. You could kill animals with your fists and cook them in the furnace with coal. What I do in Pocket Edition in the very, very beginning is I find a world with a mountain and make myself a hole in the dirt, and seal it up with dirt to the extent of only one block missing (I'm actually going to post a screenshot of that in an edit, lol). So technically, you can do mostly anything without wood, as long as you have cheats enabled.

A wild opinion appeared! Everybody freak out and start insulting each other because you don't agree with it!
Having never found one in an abandoned mineshaft yet I wouldn't count on it. It would be interesting to have a seed where the spawn is near a mineshaft that did have one. Be interesting to see how much mileage one could squeeze out of it.
If you take the binary code for the actual word of a$$ and put a "-" in front as a seed you spawn with a mineshaft pretty much right under you. There aren't many interesting items, but there are saddles and horse armor and a couple of ingots.

Yes, it's possible, you just need to find a Village, dungeon, temple, stronghold, or something like that, get lucky to get tools, ores or sticks, it's very hard, but you can do it
You can survive indefinitely by getting a creeper to blow up some cobble and encasing yourself in it (because IIRC endermen can't pick up cobble) and never moving again. Of course, that's no fun at all.
If you want to actually play, it depends. If sticks count as wood, then it'd just be a sorry existence of looting tools from villages. If they don't, then it might be fairly interesting (if extremely tedious) since you can kill witches for sticks for tools and get creepers to blow up cobble, and use crafting tables from villages to craft. Not something I'd be willing to try (too boring!) but possible.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
its possible to survive but you wont be able to do anything in the game without wood. wood is the thing that starts you off. You need it to make a crafting table and your first basic tools.
You don't necessarily need wood to get a crafting table. They can be found in NPC Villages and also in Witch Huts.
A general strategy for surviving without wood would be to find an NPC Village early on and protect it. So, if you're lucky, you'll have a crafting table there.

I think it would be a great challenge to not gather any wood, but be able to use found tools and village craft tables and furnaces. A desert Biome would just about be a necessity.
1) find a village; they have houses, crafting tables and furnaces, you know
2) collect wheat, raw chickens, sugar canes and other easily obtainable items you can sell
3) get emeralds
4) when you have enough emeralds, buy tools from the local smith
5) if there's not smith go back to point 1, otherwise start searching for Deserts, Jungles and caves in order to find treasure chests
Things you can't do: sleep, fish, build with wood (meh). You can do all other things because eve if requiring wood, the needed items can be find somewhere. Sounds like a nice challenge.
