So my school's student council is cool and we have a video game championship each year. This year's starts in 34 hours. We host multiple games, but one I brought up and that was kind of controversial this year was Minecraft. Mostly everyone was asking "What the heck is Minecraft?" and "How do you compete in Minecraft?". My answer was "It's complicated" or "I don't know yet." So now I need an idea to have 6+ish people compete. Our school computers suck, so each contestant is bringing a laptop. Finding a server is difficult, and the school internet is super slow, so that kill the multiplayer option. But what should I do? I have two possibilities:
1. Creative mode building competition, or
2. Singleplayer Survival competition to reach a defined goal.
The problem with Creative is that judging involves bias, and not everyone likes just building.
So I'm pretty sure I'm doing a singleplayer survival event. Now picking a map is difficult. I gave myself a 90 minute time limit for this. This means someone should win at right around 90 minutes. Also, the map that is played needs to be unknown by all the players, because now they all have no time to prepare, so anyone with prior experience will have an advantage and win. I was thinking Vech's, but that is popular and will only work if he comes out with a map in 24 hours.
So what are your suggestions? A custom made map? A survival based goal of a common seed that everyone gets?
See if you can find the 404 seed its a good challenge yeah thats what you should do downgrade to 1.7 or 1.8 so the seed genny is all loopy and then do the 404 put it on hard and see who lasts longest and who can get the challenges done
First, I wanted to say I wish I could play Minecraft at school! xD Anyway, I think you should give everyone the same seed and the first to make a full set of diamond tools and/or armour wins.

This is an after school activity at 6:30. We give out cash prizes. It's just a way for the COD dudes to prove who's better. COD and Madden are the most popular games. We have 7 games running I think.
well the thing is youd have to judge unless you downgraded all the MC files to 1.8 to get a fair seeds as the seeds right now are a bit weird and still buggy

I can just put a map file on a flash drive and put it on each computer. And we are doing a force update to eliminate all mods.
So seeing as you want a non-judgeable event, that leaves things which have a set goal, not open to interpretation. Resource gathering race is mostly luck, and not fun, so that rules that out. Experience race would be pointless. Killing the Enderdragon is a possibility; give each player enough Eyes of Ender to activate the portal, the coordinates of a stronghold (there are ample in the Seeds thread), and see who can do it successfully first.
They can waste as much time as they wish gathering materials, armour, et cetera, but be in on their own head, for others will be doing things faster.
Other than that, I haven't many ideas, as Minecraft is primarily a creative game, and most contests would be judging. Perhaps who can build an underwater base with working melon, wheat, animal and pumpkin farm first?

I like giving them the basics and coordinates. That is something I could create, too. This I may do. Thanks.

My friend asked me how you get minecarts to move. I told her to push it. She asked me how you push things.

I was trying to avoid the judging events as I said above. I would probably be the judge and I'm friends with a few competitors.

Look here for good ones. Many list Stronghold locations too.

It has a nice underground and doesn't encourage much exploring. I want them to mine, not run around.
I made my own portal. I could upload the map maybe. I don't want it released early though. :biggrin.gif:

If you play it, post your time of how long it took.
