Screenshots of a world I've been working on for awhile now. Superflat with only the resources you find in the bonus chest.
Main House
Lot of wool, most easily renewable of the blocks. I originally started out with a dirt fort, but eventually renovated it as access to resources improved.
Can see the mob farm in the background. Utilizes a tried and true solution I've employed several times for these types of worlds. The mobs wanting to change floors make for a stair that is in fact blocked by carpet. Instead they fall down and visit me at the bottom. Rates are pretty decent considering there's no pistons, water, etc. involved.
My Humble Farm
yeah, okay... I went a bit crazy with the roof. Needed one to keep mobs from randomly falling in and a flat roof just wasn't working for me.
Took awhile but it looks nice.
My Precious
Tools and such. I still have wood available for making chests but item frames are 100% renewable with access to cows and witches.
In case anyone is curious the carpets are sitting on top of string with nothing but bedrock below them. Mobs can't spawn on bedrock or floating carpet so the floors remain mob free.
Let them eat Cake!
My little cake stair. Honestly more for the novelty factor than practical. I do use cake as a substitute for slabs elsewhere around the site though. Only problem is that every so often I take a bite out of my structural material(makes me feel like the Witch watching Hansel and Gretal).
Presently I'm hoping to acquire a looting sword I can use for obtaining pumpkins and eventually making an Iron Golem to help with automating some of the mob farming.
I do have access to redstone. Haven't quite figured out how best to use it beyond keeping the lamps lit though.
As of the snapshot we have dirt paths that prevent mob spawning. If it stays that way I'm hoping to use that as well. Most realistic means to limit where mobs can spawn.
New Arrows also offer the possibility to make quasi-splash potions from those occasionally dropped by Witches(drinking one when killed).
I've been working a lot on my Superflat world as well. And it's in Survival. I depend on only my bonus chest and villager trades (raiding from villages as well). But your Survival world takes real dedication!
If I'm understanding the Wiki correctly you ought to be able to find wild pumpkins with enough exploring, I'd go for that rather than waiting for Halloween Sorry, appearently not, though I haven't seen an explanation of why not yet. (Probably for the same reason there are no trees.)

Aha-"decoration"!
The power of the clock is in your hands!
ie. Once I get the sword I'm adjusting the computer's date.

Thanks. Takes awhile but gradual improvement pays off.
Added additional mob sorting for the mob farm. Works surprisingly well considering how low tech it is. There's a Creative Mode version at the bottom, but basically works via the difference in mob height. Skeletons and Creepers pass under the trapdoors while Zombies and Witches are left in the middle.
I still have to drop down occasionally to clear out armored survivors and collect drops that miss the hopper(another addition), but considerably less work overall.
There were some... issuessssss... along the path to progress. The kill zone was breached and the farm above just kept sending mobs. I'm thinking a red stone off-switch will be next on the list of improvements to be made.
Interesting use of trapdoors for separating. I don't recall ever seeing that before. I'm curious though, why bother? The only really great use for it I can see would be if you wanted to setup a record farm.
It is actually the reverse of normal. The mobs left behind, Zombies and Witches have the drops I'm going after. Rare Iron from the Zombies and the normal Witch drops.
I've thought about farming records for decoration, but presently I still need the item frames for more practical storage. Right now the Creepers die due to accumulated fall damage and the only surviving Skeletons are those with at least potentially useful Armor.
I saw an Alpha thread detailing something similar but obviously it has been awhile.
All the improvements paid off. Obtained the Looting Sword needed for pumpkins.
Honestly didn't think I would ever be lucky enough to find one. Feel like I've been grinding for ages.
Present view of the mob farm:
Added a couple of new drops(left) only accessible by child zombies. Reduces the numbers being killed from fall damage as a side effect of the sorting process going on in the main drop.
please elaborate how the looting sword gives you pumpkins? Do you use the halloween pumpkin-helmet method or some other way?
Also, I do not see any cured villagers yet. Is that possible for you to do on this map? Witches throw weakness potions if you are in a certain health range, but the golden apple would be the problem. Is the nether possible for you? I was just curious. I know any scenario that enables villager curing, no matter how roundabout enables a lot more in the way of progression.
Space Expedition to EPIC 204:Go on a Space-Age Adventure to visit and explore EPIC 204, a wacky world of dense asteroids and full of alien life! Experience Custom Seasons, Weather, Over 50 new creatures, Beautiful Biomes, Alien Ruins, Dungeons, and new space age tech crafting recipes!

Pumpkins would be from the Halloween method.
Unfortunately I don't have any Apples on this world. I've used the Witch method before though on a sky block world.
Got the Pumpkin, Operation Superflat Golem is a Go!
The weird and somewhat annoying thing is that I don't think the sword was actually necessary. Keep in mind this more resembled a war-zone than a controlled test.
Was definitely fun. I'm going to get the pumpkins going and then spend some time cleaning things up. Have a few Redstone related improvements I've been wanting to make as well. Good of time as any to actually get them done.
After a ridiculous amount of time and several thousand zombies killed, I have myself a Golem
Slime farm works great as far as Slime balls go. I still need to improve the lighting situation. Mainly concerned with the possibility of skeletons killing the Golem(bad, very bad).
Did end up adding a Skeleton Assistant to the main mob farm. Helps kill off any mobs that manage to survive the drop. Only thing is he needs replacement every so often as he is eventually killed by thorn enchanted armor.
Night shot(from a bit ago):
Incorporated dirt paths. At first I wasn't sure about them, but they've grown on me.
I'm thinking next will be a more traditional wall. I want something a bit more refined and I have a ready source of slime blocks for use as windows now.
Love the aerial shot. Quaint little settlement. So you just popped all your hard work onto the snapshot?!! I'm sure you have a backup but still it surprised me.
I hadn't looked at the properties of slimeblocks....so they let light through? Is it like glass or water? The latter would seem more appropriate, but I'm better it's the former.

Thanks. I've put a lot of work into this one. I've been lucky so far with snapshots. Also not doing anything crazy either. I should make another backup though...

Lets light through like glass, has a bunch of other oddball properties though.
Can't use most of them, but the bouncing does make a fun and quick way to drop down after working/inspecting the mob farm. Occasionally use it to save the mobs from fall damage as well. Easy way to convert the lower half into a music disc grinder or if I need to replace my skeleton assistant.
Endy123, I have an idea I've not yet seen employed in your world yet.
One of the major shortages on your map is lack of water, but there is a way to get renewable water on your map through cauldrons and rainstorms--Just not source blocks.
Use the zombie iron to craft a few cauldrons and place around your base. Over the course of rainstorms they have a 15% chance each to get a bit of water in the bottom and will eventually fill up. It might be pretty to have them around as a visible source of water in an otherwise waterless world. Shame they don't do more like hydrating crops. That would be so useful for maps like mine in the nether.
There is also a super-rare way to get gold on superflat if you could get enough pigs about they would occasionally get struck by lightning and transform into pigmen. You'd have a good chance if you could space them out over a large area and nerfed your render distance to something quite small as lightning can only strike the loaded chunks. Lightning hits in a 6x6 xz box around the position chosen so I imagine with some careful design you could ensure you'd get pigs struck eventually.
Yeah, I think it is probably time to make one. Having to wait out the night for the rain will force me to improve the base's lighting situation. Has resulted in more than a few explosions as of late.

Didn't know about the render distance trick. I considered getting gold this way earlier but thought it too unlikely to be practical. Will look into it.

If the Wiki is correct a chunk has the same chance of a lightning strike independantly of how many chunks are loaded.
So fewer chunks loaded just means fewer lightning strikes in total but still the same number in the chunk(s) where you want it.
ah, that might be the case. I just assumed the rate was constant so the chunks selected would be fewer if you had lower render. Well it was a gimmick idea anyway. It'd be hard to get enough gold to do anything.
One nice thing about the nether survival is I haven't seen a creeper in ages. Although...Ghasts are pretty much the new creepers to me. Every bit as annoying.

Can now shut the trapdoor from the mob farm above and stop mob flow. Also added a trapdoor lower down for item disposal purposes. Want to add a minecart based switch, but that will probably have to wait a bit.
Got smart and replaced the older sorting system with a single piece of carpet. Works just as well to keep zombies from going the routes that the creepers and skeletons do and allowed me to recover the trapdoors for use elsewhere.
Cake door
Yeah... I was getting a bit silly. Limits mobs going into/coming from the maze of back passageways that riddle the area now. Most can fit through but see it as being impassable.
I was half thinking you could sort some of the mobs by width with differently sized cake slices. Not sure it'll be ever be useful in this world, but could be useful somewhere.
In other news...
Working on a proper wall. Mostly wool, carpet and slime blocks. About 50% done now.
Cauldron is a go! I'm thinking to place it with my horses for decoration. Hoping the pen will become home to some skeleton horses as well.

Just testing.
I'm curious...how did you get the tall grass on your wall? My best guess is repeated use of bonemeal and breaking anything that wasn't tall grass.
by c0yote
I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
You guessed right, metric tons of bonemeal. Once I had grass I then grew that with yet more bonemeal.
Stops the slimes from catching sight of me and hanging out rather than wandering away to despawn.
