Ever since the addition of Hunger and Breeding to Minecraft, I've noticed something. Starvation is a pain in the rear. Doubly so when your primary food sources (meat) do not respawn, ever, meaning you'll eventually deplete them unless you herd/breed. Or you make yourself a wheat farm, though it seems despite following tutorials on the wiki, I can't yield enough wheat per day to make a decent amount of bread. So at this point, I'm trying to figure what I'm doing wrong, and also, again, ranting a bit.
What I enjoy about minecraft is exploration, mining, etc. I like going through caves, digging my way deeper into them, and finding cool stuff like ores, dungeons, etc. This is, in my opinion, the high point of the game for me.
However, with 1.0's new rules, I also have to build wheat farms, herd animals into a barn, and breed them using that wheat if I want a constant supply of meat.
Is there any easy way to get food? Or possibly just edit/mod Minecraft to have 1.7.3 animal spawns in place again? I don't want to have to build an entire farm to survive, if I wanted to do that I'd go play Farmville. (No offense to Farmville players). I want to be able to enjoy what I liked about Minecraft before this new system was put in place that results in less time doing what I enjoy, and doing a ton of mundane activities just to ensure I don't die. And before someone says play on Peaceful, I enjoy having some kind of danger around in the form of monsters, so Peaceful mode's right out. That and I wouldn't be able to craft half the new stuff.
Yeah. I backed myself into a corner on my first 1.0 world because of this. Killed pretty much EVERYTHING within reasonable range of my spawn/base, and nothing respawned in these areas, animal wise. I tried bringing back some animals from further away, only to find herding them was cumbersome, annoying, and then a Creeper blew them up.
I am not enjoying this. I can certainly understand not having animals spawn constantly like monsters since you can breed them now, but c'mon. This is a bit much.

Two sources of infinite food: Mooshrooms:
Grab some wheat.
Go find a Mushroom Biome.
Use wheat to lure Mooshroom back to your house.
Lure Mooshroom into basement.
Make yourself a bowl.
Use bowl on Mooshroom for infinite Mushroom Stew!
Melons:
Get some Melon seeds.
Grow Melons.
When fully grown, destroy Melon.
Get about 4 Melon Slices per Melon, plus seeds.
Plant seeds, rinse, wash, repeat.
Or just play on Peaceful. But that's lame.
EDIT:
Obviously I didn't read the end of your post. Lol.
I just remembered you can't die from starvation! :biggrin.gif:
You can only get really close to dieing. :\
But there's a solution to that, kind of.
Dig a 1x2 hole, fill the top with water, suicide, spawn, pick up items from hole, continue.

No, you can die. It depends on the difficulty. Easy mode, the starvation drops you to 5 hearts. Normal drops you to half a heart. Hard kills you.
For you OP, Melon farming or mushroom farming are pretty much the best ways to survive.
Once you get the stocks to grow, you can harvest the melon, retill the earth, and the melon will pop back up within 10 mins or less. It pretty unbalanced, i'd suspect it may get nerfed. Instant food every 10 mins.
Melons don't give much when you eat them, but you can get so many of them. I have a chest full of 7 stacks of melon. I ain't starving to death any time soon.
Giant mushrooms are fine, only bad thing is you can't stack the stew.
Fish is where it's at.
If you can manage to find some cobwebs (everywhere in abandoned mineshafts), build a fishing rod and stock up. I have found it's the easiest way to get food.

Best way I've found is Mooshrooms if you can find one.
