Also, beaches are quite difficult to find in 1.8, but if you look hard enough, you will find one.
I play Minecraft standing on the roof of my house with a laptop, completely naked, the wind lapping at my hair and genitals. It is very refreshing. The neighborhood watch loves me.
See, notch didn't recode the way grass would look in mushroom biomes. You just need to destroy a LOT of mycellium and create a bridge for the grass to grow over. It looks almost too bright there, but I guess if you destroyed all the mushrooms and planted trees it would be fine. The trees are really bright too! lol

Please only+ me if I post something funny or informative.
Yeah, I now have to deal with having a home on a huge ocean, on the edge of a forest type landscape riddled with Ravines. Only I got somewhat lucky and got a Desert right next to my home.

Well there seems to be small beaches, not the large bays like before...Thanks
I posted most of this elsewhere (in the 1.9 update section) but it seems worth repeating here in this theread.
During 1.7, I believe that we had 10 different biomes. There was seasonal forest, rainforest, forest, savannah, plains, desert, swampland, taiga and tundra. Can't remember if there was one more? But in general, I really liked the 1.7 worlds and I miss several aspects of them in the worlds since the 1.8 update.
For 1.9, I believe that we currently have 9 different biomes (at least one less biome than in 1.7.3). These include: Mixed forest, Pine forest, Swampland, Extreme hills, Desert, Plains, Ocean, Tundra and Mushroom.
There are a few things disappointing me about the new biomes, as follows below.
1) I miss beaches. There is now very little sand outside deserts and hardly any beaches in the game. I really miss spawning on sand as well.
2) I miss taiga, which was the mountainous & snowy biome with the cool pine trees. It was one of my favourite biomes and I badly want it back!
3) The plains have become kind of annoying with way too much tall grass (it wasn't that bad in the old plains biome as far as I remember).
3) Prior to the 1.8/1.9 update, mountains were found in all type of biomes, but now are very rare outside the Extreme Hills biome. I'm not sure I personally like this change.
4) Apparently, Oceans can be larger than ten thousand blocks wide and long. Slighty ridiculous? Who really wants endless ocean? As a quick aside, I was interested to learn that absolutely no animals spawn in the ocean biome.
5) Then there is the Mushroom biome which just looks a bit silly and a bit like a rip-off of Terraria's giant mushrooms to me. I'm not a fan of that idea really. Interesting fact, only Mooshrooms spawn here. No other types of mobs (including hostile mobs at night) can naturally spawn on this biome. It feels a bit like a joke biome really and perhaps that's what it is supposed to be but I'm not keen.
6) In general, worlds in 1.8 and 1.9 don't feel quite as unique as the 1.7 worlds did. There is very much the sense that one seed is as much like another. You don't get the same eccentricities as you did in the pre-1.8 worlds, in my opinion.
7) Finally, according to the Wiki, Notch has stated that a new rainforest biome (or changes to the current one), snowy biomes (BRING BACK TAIGA!), as well as volcanoes (either as a biome or natural feature) are a possibility. My answer to this: yes please! In my opinion, we're badly in need of some new biome variations!
So, in other words, I'm in total agreement with the OP and then some!

Oh, that's awesome! I gotta find a mushroom biome asap! Thanks!
I haven't noticed differences between 1.7's and 1.8's grass colours, and I don't know about beaches. Maybe those darker trees got my attention, so I didn't notice any remakes on grass...
The trees are darker due to the new lighting, it makes it look better, adds depth, but with glass it looks odd...Thanks.
There are a lot less biomes with trees in them too. Before 1.8 we had rainforest, seasonal forest, woods, forest, and the beautiful minecraftian beaches. Now we have ugly pine forests with no snow in them (not even in the 1.9 prerelease) and mountain biomes with ugly grass and almost no trees (suggestion: snow capped mountains and trees and greener grass in the valleys, and little rivers).

Yea, I think it is a must for the player to spawn on a beach because with the spawn it is now you can spawn on oceans...which just sucks. Thanks.
One thing I noticed is that the seafloor is very steep, there's no gradual one or two block deep water for a while before the really deep water starts, it's like all the shorelines are right on the continental shelf and drop into the abyss right from shore. Used to be you could pull a boat up to any shore and have a place to land and get out in one block of water. Now you have to be careful there's not 50 blocks of water under you when you get out.

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.
One thing I have noticed in terms of 1.8 beaches is the 'patchiness' of the underwater sea floor. It's nice to have clay more common, but it doesn't look very nice to have the seabed a patchwork of different blocks.
The Back to Alpha texture pack has the good ol' vibrant green grass, though I'm not sure if it's been updated recently for new stuff...
I miss beaches too, I built my first house on one.
Hold on one minute. I know all about minecraft biomes. Notch did not change the grass color. Let me tell you what really happened:
Before 1.8 biomes like swamp and rain forest had close to no difference what so ever besides the grass color. The biome in the pic you posted is a 1.7 jungle or swamp. In 1.8 the jungles and swamps were combined in to the same thing which was swamps and they had grass just like in the picture you have there. But notch changed them to have dark grass. I hope when he makes jungles he gives them that un-darkened light grass.
It's kind of hard to explain but I did my best.

Yea, I would like the option to disable biome colored grass. Thanks.
...thats silly. Thanks.
Well there seems to be small beaches, not the large bays like before...Thanks
Thanks.
Well the grass colors look more realistic, but less Minecrafty.
Yea, it seems like there are less biomes in 1.8 now...
Good Ideas!
Yea, there should be an option to disable biome coloring, that may result in less lag. Thanks.
Heh, I love that! I'm gunna put it in the main post. Thanks!
Well it seems like they are adding a lot of new awesome stuff, just the old original stuff is getting stomped on and ceases to exist. Thanks.
Yea, Thanks.
Oh, that's awesome! I gotta find a mushroom biome asap! Thanks!

Yup. Thanks.
yea, that would be smart. Thanks.
Yes thats it, its dull now. Thanks.
Well only if you made a new world you would notice it. There are still beaches just they are tiny and boring. Thanks.
Yea, it did. Thanks.
Yea, I think it is a must for the player to spawn on a beach because with the spawn it is now you can spawn on oceans...which just sucks. Thanks.
Oh it does? That sucks. Thanks.
It is SO much easier to get grass over with the "Silky" enchantment on tools - too! We might see more of that soon :smile.gif:
There are still beaches - To be honest though, I gave up finding them and made my own :smile.gif:
