So, as we all know, gold is now a renewable resource via the gold nuggets that zombie pigmen drop.
If you set up a zombie pigmen mob trap/gravity kill in the nether, you can harvest these gold nuggets at a decent rate.
Now, for a full suit of armor you will need 24 gold ingots, or 216 gold nuggets. Zombie pigmen drop 0-1 gold nuggets each (0.5 on average), so on average you'll have to kill 432 zombie pigmen for a suit of gold armor.
Gold armor has twice the durability of leather armor.
For leather armor, you need 24 leather. Cows drop 0-2 leather, so let's say 1 on average. That means you need to kill an average of 24 cows for a suit of leather armor. You'd need to kill 48 cows for 2 suits of leather armor that would give you the same total durability as with one suit of gold armor.
That means that if it is easier for you to kill 432 zombie pigmen (via an automated farm) than kill 48 cows (by hand, now that cows don't automatically spawn), then gold armor is actually a good deal.
Gold armor, having a higher durability, is also less likely to run out all of the sudden without warning during a crucial battle.
That said, gold is also useful for other things, like booster rails, whereas leather is just useful for armor. So even if you do quickly accumulate gold via gold nuggets from a zombie pigman farm, you will probably be tempted to spend that gold on other things first.
Anyways, just some thoughts. Basically I just love the idea that gold is a renewable resource now.

Or take 2 minutees on mining for full iron armor, which beats leather and gold
2 Minutes? At my old house i had 17 Stacks of Iron. Then i relocated my Ores due to an Odd explosion. It was a 1.3_01 World. The seed doesnt work. It just had a big old biome where it was. The terrian that was there is still mostly there.
you also have to remember that gold is also more highy enchantable...
it can go to like 3x leather armor...
and can protect you from fire, skeleton arrows, etc
so gold is way better

"Prove to me there isn't a cookie here." <-- Religious thinking
Everything in minecraft is a renewable source.
Just expand the map.

Are you sure about that? I heard that obtaining ice from silk touch was removed for RC2.
Ima test that right now. I have a silk touch pick on my singleplayer world i never use.
EDIT: You are right...

However, once I hadn't found iron for a while, I panicked...
