In survival, do you think hunger should go down that fast?
NEEEED TOO MUCH!!! Killing the enviroment.
In Real life a person can survive a MONTH without eating, so should it be like, you get out of hunger in 5 Minecraft days, or when you sleep at night you wake up with -3 Health Squares?
It does go down sorta fast if you're really going crazy with activity. If you're not already aware of all the factors that go into it, I would suggest reading the wiki entry on hunger. That being said....
It's all a balancing act. It's meant to add more challenge but not be too cumbersome. Yes, if it were to be more realistic, the first few bars would go down quickly like it does not, and you would lose the benefit of health regeneration. But the lower bars would take more time to deplete. Not only that, but there would be negative consequences with the lowering health bar. Slower movement speed, lower attack power, maybe even a reduction in visual radius?
But really, I wouldn't want it that way. I like how it is now. It's an easy implementation that is easy to understand and adds challenge. I don't need it to be super realistic. After all, I'm playing a game where I karate chop trees for blocks of wood. I wasn't expecting everything to be too realistic. :wink.gif:
The hunger bar is fine. Now that wheat attracts animals you don't have to worry about killing the local wildlife to feed yourself until you have renewable food sources running - you can just wander a little and lure back another region's animals.
Though maybe the rate of consumption should change with difficulty.
I've never had a problem with starving the the first few days. On my first night (or two) I run around with my wooden sword and kill spiders until I have enough string for a fishing pole. There is always water somewhere, no matter what biome I am in (even deserts) and I am able to catch, cook and eat fish to my heart's content until I find a place suitable enough to build my first stronghold and start a wheat or animal farm.
the hunger bar IMO is the worst implementation in the entire game...it turns the game from the fast-paced insta-heal game it was, to the type of game FPS critics hate: the oh-im-low-on-health-time-to-go-hide-and-suck-my-thumb type of game

lol no, u should always stay at full "hungerbarthingy" (lol) and u should wear armour, the only time i get at low health is when ninjacreepers jump from the sky and Boom. but normaly im fine =)
And it makes the game so much more fun, before i didnt care much if i got lost in a cave and had no food, id just make myself some iron armour and e safe... now im more like " OHH ****, imma die of hunger, need to find the way out... Oh get out of my way creeper, u no dangerus anymore" xD

you can now breed animals as well. as long as you keep at least pair of each around, you pretty much have infinite food.
chickens lay eggs pretty often as well, keep a few for making cake it you like, chuck the rest to spawn more chickens.
By that logic Steve should be dead because he can't drink water.
Pretty easy if you ask me. But I do agree, it is very difficult to be fully nourished in your first few days playing.

Yeah. Food and animal drops are a bit hard to come by.
well this isn't a FPS
I personally have fasted for 7 days... after about day 3 you stop being hungry.
On topic... I think that if you run out of hunger bar it should reduce your health at the same rate that the hunger bar drops with the same mechanics.
This way you have about twice as long before you die unless you exert yourself.

Don't fear the creeper, happens all the time, don't fear the creeper
This is correct i was just about to say this
I always eat as soon as the bar drops by 1. A stack of Bread lasts weeks.
