I created a mob gravity trap but I only get one or two mobs at a time and it usually takes a while before those show up. I am not sure what I did wrong when I built it but the spawn floor starts 24 blocks high and is completely dark with the pads being 8x8 with water in the middle of them leading to a drop. Any ideas why I am not getting much off of this? Also, I have torches all around the trap so that mobs do not spawn in that area.

Light up nearby caves, to a 150 block radius at least, it'll reduce the mob spawning space underground, and give more to your spawning pads :biggrin.gif:

I have the feeling I am going to be very busy with the torches tonight. Also, is it worth building a second story to this thing or does one story usually work?

It helps alot, don't be exactly 24 blocks away, it helps even with 26 blocks away, 24 is minimum, so a second floor would help, and probably dig 2 more spots down.

Let me know how that works for you... I've done the same thing and i get nothing in mine, i have a two block high wall (interior) and my ceiling is faulted to allow for enderman... i've also enclosed my drop down to the ground with a lava trap at the bottom, but i get nothing... i even tried distinguishing the lava to see if it was giving it light... how thick are your walls? mine are only 1 block thick and i used cobble stone...
oh and one last point, ive stood in the room as well to see if the mobs were in there during the night and day and got nothing... will mobs spawn while in a room that size?
No mob traps will work really well unless you eliminate dark areas in the world one way or another (the easiest way being with torches). If mobs are indeed spawning in the trap, they may simply be getting stuck somewhere. If you are using water, make sure there are no still areas; everything should be flowing. Also, if mobs need to drop more than 3 blocks off of the spawning pads, they will not do so on their own. Lining the sides of the pad can solve this problem, another popular solution being pistons.

What about if i move mine out in to the ocean... i know they won't spawn if im not there but i dont mind waiting a bit at the receiving end

There can still be caves under the ocean.
