So, I have had this idea for some easy (well, I say easy, it will take a long time to make) and organized storage for the most used items (spades, pickaxes) and stuff that get's picked up and clogs inventory space (e.g. cobblestone, dirt, gravel). So anyway, my idea is a wide (8x8) tower that is very tall. I'm gonna put chests on the walls with a sign next to them for the specific item that chest holds, then i'm gonna make a staircase so I can reach them easier.
So, good idea?
Doesn't sound very efficient. I usually keep a side room in my house just for chests, and arrange them like this (top view):
(floor)
(chest)
(sign)
etc.
So that each chest has a sign in front of it.
Even when I stored entire chests full of cobblestone for building purposes, I never needed more than a small room. It's easy to walk across the top of the chests to get to the back.

I make a warehouse with that design in it sort of, but it goes two or three blocks deep, with a catwalk through the middle. Then I put the checkered chests on three layers of wall. That way I can have a regular sized building that holds a lot of things.
I appreciate the simple large room with lots of chests on every side, because i think it looks not so good to place chests on the naked wall that they "fly", I think it looks not good.
And in my oppinion a tower is quite uncomfortable because you have to get on stairs or ladders up and down everytime.
Also, if you're playing Singleplayer, just don't make too many chests because you will never fill them up :wink.gif: Summarize, like "Netherstuff", "Mob-Drops", "Gravel and Flint" and so on.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
There's a block? Break it. There's a creeper? Slay it. There's a diamond? Get it!
You could always make it taller, and put the less-used items (no need to throw things away even when you dont use them, eh?) to the top.
I like the idea, btw. Build it & give us pictures!
good idea, it will mean less space (and less cobblestone and time) to build!
yeah, i haven't got much time tonight but i will post the WIP by the end of the week!

You can make Multiple levels and name them as: Armory - for wepaons and armor
Tools - obviously for tools
Pantry- Food and the like
Materials - cobblestone, wood, etc
Items - your cogs, extra chests, buttons switchs, saddles.
I would post pics but I am far to lazy to get them :3

<--- Finally complete!

Each of the chests is a double chest. The blocks without torches are stair blocks, which are considered transparent, so that the chests can open.
Place some signs and it's optimal storage :3
But I think it's lacking some beauty ._.
On the contrary, I think that's quite elegant.

Use Glowstone instead of so many torches, make the room not so high, maybe it's just the texture pack I don't like :biggrin.gif:
There aren't any signs because only two of the chests contain items
= Wooden stairs to allow chest to still be opened
= Sign stating whats in the chests
this is exactly what platypus1130 posted above.
I was stating, that 4 chest per wall, could make a tower.
It seems I have been bested.
I tip my hat to you sir.

More efficient:
14 to your 12
