what if the cave is big and you run out of torches.
Well make a lot. When I go exploring I always bring 3 stacks, because I'm there for a long time. And btw if you are running past iron, coal, gold or w/e don't stop to mine it, just light the cave fast and return later for the ores. Hope that helped.
When you are in a cave run fast and put torches as you go, I have noticed that if I light the cave fast enough not many mobs spawn that way.
Mobs won't spawn within a certain distance of the player.

i only bring 1 stack(if that)because what if you die in there and waste all those torches, there goes coal collecting.

Put logs in the top part of a furnace, and coal in the bottom. Free charcoal, and can be used for anything that coal can be.

You need to wear at least iron armor and use atleast an iron sword. You should also take a stack of logs and a stack of coal. Log will last longer than just taking sticks along and you can mine more coal as you are exploring. As it was suggested earlier, put your torches only on one side of the cave (I prefer the right hand side!) This way when you leave, you just go with the torches that are on the opposite wall. Make sure to take food!

i don't use a diamond sword because what if you die and don't get it back.(not that i don't have enough diamonds)
Well why do you collect diamonds then ? If you mine something and don't use it all the trouble getting it was useless. Trust me having a diamond sword will help you a lot. And if you are afraid of dying just bring a bed and save the checkpoint whenever your health is low and incase you die you will spawn closer to your corpse and you can collect your stuff.
Oh also wear iron armour.
If it is a narrow cave, then rush in and light the entire thing. You should only encounter a couple of baddies.
If it is a large "boiling pot" cavern, then light it starting at the edges, keep going around until its safe.
If the cave is multistory (and it sometimes is) light up the upper levels first, but be careful when climbing if you are coming from the bottom level, as you can often get a nasty surprise. To be safe, tower up from the center of the bottom floor, then make a little bridge to the level you are trying to clear.
And last but not least, keep a good look around you! Awareness is the best defense.
peaceful is boring,i kinda want to fight bad things.

Stone swords are crappy, use Iron or Diamond.
