It's not supposed to be a challenge. You're still doing exactly what you always did with food, just in a different way. You only die from an empty hunger bar on Hard; On Easy and Normal, you just have less HP. The trade off is that you now regen health when you're at full, so you don't have to waste food healing yourself after you take a few drops that are a little too big.
Since you only die from starvation on Hard, let's assume you only give a **** about your hunger bar while exploring. Now, let's say, in order to maintain a full food bar, you need to eat every 8 minutes, like you've been saying. Now, with the old system, most people brought something like 4 porkchops with them into a cave. 8 minutes each for the 4 porkchops is 32 minutes of exploration. Meanwhile, with the old system, that was your 10 HP, plus 4 more HP per porkchop, so 26 HP. Explore for 32 minutes, or until you lose 26 HP.
The difference is, every time you get ambushed by a Creeper, you lose HP; You don't lose time. Accidentally land some gravel on your head? HP. Take a drop that's a little too big? HP. Too deep in the water to swim back up before your breath runs out? HP. While, yeah, you could sustain those 26 hit points for longer than half an hour, you needed to be careful; Drop distances had to be counted, and if it was too far, you had to dig your way down. Always have to make sure that you can get back for air in time. You killed a skeleton, and rather than be happy you beat it, you curse at the hits you took fighting it, which directly correlated to how much longer until you had to return for more porkchops.
With the new system, the resource management is still there, since you still need food, but now it's you managing your food, not managing your hit points. So, now, when you're standing at the edge of a ravine, asking yourself "Can I make this jump?" you're not worrying about how many hit points you might lose (unless it's "all of them") but rather the stuff you should actually be worrying about, like "Can I jump far enough?" and "What's at the bottom?" ad "Is the other side safe?" It puts less focus on how many hits before you run home to mama and more focus on the actual adventure.
TL;DR: You ALWAYS had to worry about food, but the hunger bar lets you be less anal about it.

I never used to worry about food whilst mining. I'd take down 2-3 chops tops and iron armour, and only have to surface when I ran out of torches cause I wouldn't take down a full stack of logs.
Not that I've updated to 1.8 yet. I don't particularly want my world to be griefed by Endermen who I haven't seen.
Yeah the game can be quite difficult when you just start. Don't worry, you'll get better! :smile.gif:
I can agree with an option to disable it, however, there are currently 2 ways to do so, peacefull and creative. Easy for those who don't want hunger to have that big an impact.
The problem is, I want to be able to fight off zombies and creepers so that I'll get better at fighting in Minecraft, without having to worry about the hunger system. Peaceful mode and creative mode aren't going to allow me to do that.
Then again, why doesn't somebody make a mod to remove hunger?
Yup exactly my point. Its not hard to make a farm , its not fun though. Why add a feature thats just a boring grind.
It's not hard to make a mine, it's not fun though. Why add a feature that's just a boring grind?
Hunger makes you actually think about what you're doing and increases the challenge of the new Strongholds and Mineshafts, as you can't simply cram a mound of porkchops into your face to heal all of your wounds.

You used to use two-three inventory spaces for your two-three pieces of food. You use one now to store your sixty four pieces of food. I don't see what the problem is here.
I just got minecraft. Of course, I'm going to start building a bit. So I'm on survival, making stuff, but I get empty hunger. No problem, I'll go on easy mode! It only gets half of my health.
Then the skeletons take me down to 1 health, so I switch to peaceful. Problem? It keep's damaging me and then healing me, so it's repetitive. Add rain, and a horrible computer, and you lag - on the lowest graphic settings.
My two bits.
If you're playing 1.9 on peaceful then hunger is effectively turned off. It doesn't deplete, you don't take damage. Not sure about how it is in 1.8
As for cave exploring? well heres food for thought. Don't take damage. Thats 10x more interesting and challenging than "derp i kill 30 pigs and eat food every 8 mins derpderp".
That works with the new food system, too. Especially if you play on easy, you don't have to eat - ever! Unless you take damage. (Also true on normal, technically, but with 1/2 heart you can die from falling a few blocks)
As for hard level - hard was never hard. But at least now it tries to be with starvation death.
You're just being nitpicky. You want mobs and you want to build, but you don't want to deal with hunger. Go to creative, install Single Player Commands, and spawn mobs every night so you have some to play around with. Derp. I'm pretty sure most of the community enjoys having something else to work for (that is, setting up a food source ASAP) on top of surviving the hordes of mobs at night, finding a good place to settle down, and settling down.
Until death has some sort of consequences I'll keep doing my thing and avoid all this fussing over food: put your stuff in a chest, sleep in a bed and suicide when you wake. The cycle of life in my Minecraft world.
However it is called survival and having hunger is just adding to that game mode, I like the idea but it's a avoidable game play mechanic.
Heck, I love the new system. Keeping your hunger bar full is fairly easy, and once it is, it is far harder to be killed by random events than it previously was. Food is actually far more powerful as a healing agent than it once was.

You say that surviving hordes of mobs at night is something you have to work for? um... you can dig a 1x2 hole and put a block of dirt on top. You are now immune to mobs. You can now survive and it only takes 6 seconds to do. Because minecraft's only real objective atm is to build , the only purpose surviving allows is that very action. Yet from a mechanic point of view , any true builder will see it as an annoyance. And one that has nothing to do with that goal. Mining ties into the goal of building. Building can tie into the goal of surviving , though not exclusively. Yet eating? to a builder , the only purpose of it is to stop oneself from dieing due to hunger. A need has been created , and a solution to it as well. But the solution is completely unrelated to the current goals in minecraft. Therefore it is anti fun. I realize a fan boy will like almost anything , but being objective , im sure many can see this (i know a few posters have relayed this view).
IF minecraft does truely move towards more definitive goals like terraria (which doesn't have a stupid hunger system fyi) , then perhaps it would be more legitimate. But over all , why add this boring mechanic , at the very least , before adding the goals it serves?
I think ive covered most of the arguments throughout this thread. Its understandable that not everyone has read the entire thing , and as such they have not encountered them. But regardless , only a small portion of the responders who claim to like the hunger system have actually been able to explain why. And their reasons are incredibly similar to a hardcore role players view on games. They want realism , they want the game to be like a real wild life survival test. However as many others , even supporters have mentioned , realism is not something remotely possible in minecraft. You punch trees for your first pick.......... when you mine stuff , it comes out 100% the same every time in a perfect little square. You die and you respawn......
I enjoy building practical things, I don't just build a massive castle if there isn't something practical in every room. Hunger has gotten me to think about different farms and chicken egg farming and killing contraptions for my shelters and settlements.

I enjoy having the hunger system. It helps me connect with my Minecraft character.
When I started the game on an island with only 1 tree, it is a major part of why I was is such a hurry. I had to get some sort of food source figured out quick. Instead of a strange rationing behavior for my limited resources on the island, I found myself using them as liberally as possible to try and get a reliable source of food.
Honestly it reminded me of the movie Castaway and books like Robinson Crusoe. It gave me a goal beyond just "Surviving" in a 2x1 hole in the ground when night came.
Personally I would not mind the concept of having the option of disabling it but seeing as Mojang may not have that on their list of things to do immediately (With all those bugs still to fix), it seems the best option is to just get a mod for it. You are free to play Minecraft your own way, no one is going to stop you editing the game client.
Eating food every once in a while is NOT hard to do, as has been discussed. The benefits of the system, namely more interesting monster encounters, more dangerous caves/night time, and balancing sprinting, are worth the drawbacks, which as we've discussed are only MINOR inconveniences.
hunger is fantastic. it balances out lots of things that were already in the game and too easy.
Also how would you suggesting controlling how often someone can sprint if hunger wasn't added?
I disagree. The new hunger system means that you can't just carry around a few porkchops to heal yourself. It enhances the survival aspect of survival mode. If you want to build an epic castle in the sky, then maybe you should play creative. That is the whole point of creative mode. This is survival mode, the whole point of which is to make it a constant challenge to survive.
However, thats not to say that your argument is invalid, it just goes to show that whatever Notch/Jeb/Whomever does, there is always going to be debate as to the outcome. In some cases, the entire community will unite against an update, like they did in the Halloween update when mobs could spawn underground at increasing light levels. Remember that? Odds are, there will be some outcry which will force Notch to reevaluate the hunger system. Who knows, it might even be removed in the 1.10 update. But until then, live with it. Creating posts like this is most likely not going to help in anyway, considering the famous lack of interest Notch tends to show in these posts. Also, I quite like the fact that you can starve away half your health by not eating. It's quite fun on our PVP server when people are too stupid to eat before they go into battle.
But in conclusion, hunger system is here and it is doubtful that it will be edited in the near future. Creating topics like these in no way influences Notch, they just push valid topics to the back of the line, meaning that in many cases, those people never get answers to their questions. For Christ's sake, use your brain before you create a topic; Think to yourself, will people give a damn. Yes. Is it a controversial issue? Definetly. Will creating this topic in anyway affect whether the hunger bar is removed? The overwhelming odds say that it won't. So please, only create a topic regarding these updatesif it san issue that genuinly needs attention, not just to vent your petty problems on the internet.

Is that a bronze helmet from runescape?
