...which apparently doesn't actually pause the game? I had just cleaned out my slime-spawning room when the phone rang, so I hit escape to bring up the menu, which in every single other game I've played in my whole life stops the game action so one can do things like answer the phone, and when I came back a slime that wasn't there when I hit escape had killed me. So annoying, why?? Argh

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Well, I noticed this in the last update. I think they did it so you can't just pause and be perfectly safe??? I know it has always been a feature in multiplayer, maybe there was a leak or something!??!?!?!?!?!?
It's one thing to die in battle or because I made a mistake involving a cliff or lava, but I shouldn't have to completely exit the game to take a five-minute break, and I feel that my trust in a standard game mechanic has been broken. *grumble*

I just put a bunch of blocks below me. Then hope it's out of a skeletons range and then pause the game. That way I would a better way of surviving lol.
If you're playing on a server (local or otherwise), then, no, bringing up the menu does not pause the game, even if you're the only player. Reason being, the server controls the action, and continues to run the game for the chunks surrounding your character, until you actually disconnect.
Speaking of the PC version, at least: if you're playing a singleplayer non-server game, then the menu screen does pause the game as you'd expect.
What are you playing on? (PC, Xbox, PS, Pocket Edition?) What version? And is it a Singleplayer or Multiplayer game you connect to?
It must have been a weird glitch because I was playing just now and it did in fact pause the game. I don't know what happened earlier.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally open the world to LAN?
What s/he said. Opening a world to LAN will prevent it from pausing.

Always remember that Jesus loves you so much that He died rather than risk spending eternity without you.
"What do you say to lunch, followed by breakfast? Because we're time travelers, and that's how we roll! Then, cocktails with Moses, and I'm going to invent a flying submarine. Why? Because no one ever has, and it's annoying!"
How would one "accidentally" open to LAN? It's a several step process.

I am the only person using my wifi, which is why I exclusively play single player.

No, I definitely paused it, and I don't have anything mapped to "E" anyway. My inventory is "I" because I use the arrow keys instead of WASD and that's closer.

probably they made it harder so that you cant pause the game to think what you should do next

Huh... Probably press 'open to lan' and ask anyone with that same wifi to check the 'lan multiplayer' section

Didn't hit "E" thinking you hit Esc because you were in a hurry? I have done this *sigh*
