My friend claims that there's an algorithm to find ores. He doesn't hack so don't even mention it, and he doesn't have the seed because it's on my server, and I've spied on him and it works. He mines straight for a while then backtracks and mines diagonally down and finds diamonds. Anyone else know how to??? He refuses to tell ANYONE

I'm pretty sure that ore is spawned based on random variables for each chunk - so even if you had the percentages of what ore could be in a chunk - this wouldn't be enough to predict exactly where diamond would be located.
On the other hand there are hacks that allow this - so it sounds like he's cheating.
It is possible that he has the map generation algorithm broken down, but if he doesn't have the seed this would be impossible.
So he is either hacking to get the map seed, or is hacking to have "X-ray" vision.
Alternatively he may of logged on and set up illusions by deliberately placing Diamond ore somewhere and back-filling with smooth stone.
However I think you will find the premise of Occam's Razor is applicable here.

"It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for the winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. And also he got a racecar. Is any of this getting through to you?"
Don't say it's hacks! It is his friend and he knows his friend very well - its not hacks! He just doesn't know how he does it, and this friend refused to share his secret, but it's not hacks! Oh and he knows that his friend doesn't know how to hack cause his friend told him so.
So the lesson here folks? His friend hacks. Whatever the heck that means these days...
Does the '/seed' command not work on multiplayer? I normally play single player, so that is something I don't know. But I wouldn't think it would be disabled by default, since all it does is tell you what the seed is. Granted, people could use this to generate the world themselves and pre-explore for interesting things (dungeons, strongholds, nether fortrii etc), so maybe it is disabled.
To me the most likely scenario is that he has somehow determined what the seed is and is using the algorithm that the game uses to determine where ores are. Either that or he's using some sort of X-Ray mod. Unless you can actually physically watch him play the game and see that he isn't using an X-Ray mod or other such device you really can't be sure.
Or he's just using a good branch mining system and it seems like magic to kids who are used to just running around caving and digging pit mines. In fact the digging down diagonally reminds me of an old branch mining system from years ago that I tried once.
Murphy's Law?? If anything can go wrong it will go wrong? I think you are thinking of Occam's Razor: The simplest explanation is usually the correct explanation.

He got luck or a hack.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
