So, I will be building a two level deep dungeon, the question is...
What do YOU want in it?
Furthermore, your choices will let me know what people want the most! Of course I'm always up for making other kinds of dungeons, but whatever. This will help me make the best of the best! You can also ask for what you want in the dungeon and there's a very high chance it'll be in there!
If you want proof of my skill, you can check the map in my signature, Church of Lehparsi.
Vote away!
Pictures of zelda and diablo to give you something to think of and bias your vote on:
And music to get you in the mood of either game to further bias your vote!
If you want the dungeon to be built off someone's map (made in paint), please post it here and make sure it's detailed! The post containing the map with the highest reputation (in the bottom right) will be chosen!
I will close the poll on Wednesday the 20th at 6:30 P.M. EDT
A series of puzzles inside a long hall or building, one unlocking access to the next. Weird traps that don't kill the player, but use pistons to push the player to areas he or she wouldn't normally be able to access given the supplies you provide. Some will move the player farther away from the objective, some will move the player closer to the objective (i.e. push the red button, a piston moves you into a chute that washes you out of the castle; push the blue button, a different piston lifts a block revealing a hidden passage, or raises you up onto a platform where you can jump to a hidden ledge.)
Some traps will cause damage and/or kill the player, but these are mostly avoidable by making wise choices and using logic.
One of my favourites is a series of mazes one of our fellows built on SMP. The first maze was easy. When you got to the centre, you found a chest full of supplies you could use in the next challenge. Also at the centre is a shaft that leads down into a dungeon. The dungeon is full of spiders, but when you finally kill them all, light up the room, and destroy the spawner, the floor is revealed to be a miniature map of where the next objective is. Except north, south, east, west aren't labeled. using logic and your memory of the maze layout, you head off in the correct direction and find a larger 3-D maze surrounded by lava. The only way out is solving the maze, or if you want to take your chances in the lava that's an option too. At the maze's end atop the monolith, you find a lot of loot and a boat. There is a canal of water that ends in a waterfall beyond the lava. As well as instructions on how to find and survive the next challenge.
Much of the time, what you're looking for is in plain sight, or just outside the LOS but easily accessible using blocks and items at hand. You would be surprised at how many players never look up, or down, or behind themselves; you could hide a diamond block in a tree crown and chances are 90% of normal server players would not discover it in a month's time. That said, many noob puzzles assume advanced knowledge of minecraft physics, redstone circuitry, etc. Steer clear of any puzzle that can only be solved by a specialist.
Be creative, pistons may help a lot, but don't overuse them to handle block and player movement. And don't rely on monsters alone to do your killing. Creepers will ruin your setup, or they will force you to build mostly in obsidian, which limits the other types of traps and hidden spaces you can develop. (Pistons can't push obsidian)
The first maze in the example above is about 80 x 50 and has a 21 x 30 x 5 subterranean map chamber below it. You can do it in an afternoon with graph paper, coloured pencil, and WorldEdit. The second maze is much more involved. It measures 81 x 81 x 54h and is made entirely out of glass blocks. There are 17 levels of passages, linked to one another by one or more short flights of glass steps. The passages were constructed first in cobble, then the glass placed around the cobble, then the remaining spaces filled in with more glass. It took 2 1/2 months to build by hand and takes the average idiot (me) about 2-3 hours to solve, using wool blocks to mark passages (cheats). Other traps/puzzles can be smaller, thanks to pistons which can move players and blocks about without having to pre-construct spaces. A 16 x 16 x 7 step pyramid has space for two storeys and a central access shaft as well as any additional passages or rooms to be constructed under ground level.
Have the dungeon have a number of simple puzzles, with signs that say stuff like "You can't beat this!" and "This is impossible!"
Then, at the end, have a doorway into a room with a double chest in it. However, every block on the floor has a pressure plate, and all under the floors and in the walls will be TNT. Stepping inside will set off a catastrophic explosion that destroys everything and one that you love.
A good feature is a seemingly empty room with a simple puzzle near the end of the dungeon. When the player completes the puzzle, though, the entrances seal and rooms full of monsters open. The player must kill all the monster and reopen the doors by activating a lever in one of the rooms.
The problem with dungeons in Minecraft are creepers, the can blow holes in walls and give players shortcuts. It would be better to use spawners for other monsters and traps.
I'm all for puzzle dungeons, with a healthy amount of combat to get the blood flowing. I'm excited to see what kind of puzzles could be made in minecraft ^.^
A dark tunnel that leads to a lit, mossy cobble area, in that area there are doors in the side and places to put levers in, when you put a lever and activate one of the spots, a door will open and lead you to 1 challenge, in the end of every chalenge there will be a chest with another lever that you can use to open another door, once you passed all dungeons you can open the treasure door by turning on all of the lever (use a massive and gate for this, or something a tad more simple).

Okay! The votes are in. Looks like what people want most is a dark and gothic place, with a fairly well lit area (whose monsters mostly come from spawners) and have a few puzzles, and it will all be placed in a 50x50 room!
Thanks for your votes, I'll see you guys when the project is done!
What do YOU want in it?

Made in paint just like you asked.
