I thought that Jeb/Notch said that animals were going to be much less common now? My new world seems to be the opposite when it comes to sheep.
I just started my new 1.8 world and decided to live right at my spawn point. As I built, I began to notice that a lot of sheep were around me. As I began to explore around the area, I kept running into more and more sheep.
Sorry for the lack of pictures. Just trust me when I say that I've seen more sheep in the past hour in 1.8 than I did in a whole day playing 1.7
I too have noticed an enormous flux in sheep, and when I was about to make a thread bout it, I searched and found this one. So i'm assuming it's a bug.
My understanding is that they don't start less common but that they don't despawn or respawn. So if you go on a energy drink induced killing spree your sheep will be gone but now........FOREVER..... I have sheep I got wool from on my map 3 rl days ago and it still hasn't regrown and the sheep is still kicking it around the ol house.
I played for about an hour and a half after updating. I saw only 1 cow, 3 pigs, a good number of chickens, but like 30 sheep, at least. And I was killing them all and still finding more.

Any reason for this?
You are very smart, many peole build their house so far from the spawn point because they want a good veiw, but they dont relize (dont know if i spelled that right) that the compass points to their original spawn, not there bed, there are very few people that do what you do, including me. but back to the topic at hand, at least you get mobs, even at night, i have to go really far just to see anything.

Yeah, I always try to make my first home/base near the spawn point for that reason. I'll expand later. It is slightly lucky to have a ton of sheep but I have to mute my game because their constant "BAAAAA" is driving me insane.
I'm in a swamp biome next to a mountain biome, and I have sheep every where as well, although basically nothing else. I'm glad I have mushrooms an wheat or I would starve for lack of pigs, chicken and cows.
Since 1.8 animals don't respawn so keep those sheep safe.
I made a new world with the seed "this world will be empty" and guess what.
It almost is.
You spawn on a small island, near is an even smaller one with just 1 tree and some grass. If you're lucky, you get some seeds, else, restart the world. There are NO animals on those islands. You need to travel south or north for around 1 day to find some land and animals. South is an big swamp biome with MANY sheep (even on trees), north found some chicken, found ~15 eggs in 1 day and got back to make a farm. I didn't go back south to see if the wool grown back. Anyways, I have to travel 1 day every time I need wool.
As you can see, it all depends how lucky you are. I'm not, so I got no animals at my spawn. Was eating rotten meat to survive first night until my wheat was ready.

Hmmm weird. I was becoming annoyed because I couldn't find any sheep. I need wool for a bed. Maybe it just depends on the biome?
Also, love the thread title.
Well I'd gladly share my sheep with you if I could. They are getting particularly annoying with their constant "Baaaaa" lol

Sheep tend to be in forest biomes now, I feel for the OP, because my house has been overrun by sheep.

I will in the future but I'm busy with my house.
I'll pass on help lol
I fly solo :dry.gif:
Sheep spawn in Forest Biomes and Swamp Biomes
Pig spawn in *not yet mentioned*
I bet the new Biomes in 1.9 will be great for cows and chickens.
It would seem that what people have said in this thread does lend to the idea that animals now spawn in specific biomes. Maybe......
I like it though. I'm always in the market for wool.
