So I've recently just been back to my second base in my world and taken the minecart line I have out to a Mooshroom island - it was generated in 1.7.4, and its the first time I've visited the area in 1.8.3. There is an article in the wiki about Ocean Monuments generating in previously generated areas (1.7 onwards I guess) and it says specifically
Ocean monuments can spawn in existing chunks from older versions of Minecraft, as long as players have not spent more than 3 minutes total near those chunks.
As I'm travelling over a deep ocean I suddenly hear the sounds the guardians make when firing upon the squid - I didn't think there would be anything there as although I've only travelled thru this area, I'm sure the travel time cumulatively is way over 3 mins total - it took longer to build the line originally probably - so I stop the cart and jump In the water, but apart from loads of squid, I can't see any Monument or Guardians. Using Minutor shows nothing either. But I still here the occasional sound. I'm assuming this is a glitch or am I missing something? Anybody else experienced this?
Edit: Ah-haa, after doing a bit of exploring I found a load of Guardians! So I'm guessing whilst the monument has'nt generated, the bounding box for the monument exists and thus the guardian spawn area exists... is this typical?
Interesting. So perhaps in existing chunks no temple is generated, however the bounding box is still defined?
I have an old early release map that I was poking around in a couple weeks ago and was trying to get the portals relit and when I was boating out to my ender fortress I stumbled upon an ocean temple that was generated mostly under some land. It was a Hardcore world so I didn't investigate too closely yet.
Yeah, I don't know whether the situation I have is rare or the norm for pre 1.8 deep ocean generated areas over 3 min load time. I'm not sure how I can tell, except to generate a test world in 1.8.3 on my seed and visit the area ... when I reached my Mooshroom Island I did have a trawl around the edges as there were some deep ocean pockets there, but no luck ...
(Portals relit? Is that the same glitch like I had when I visited old areas Pre 1.8.3 in my world and found all the portal deactivated? That's was a *****, had no means of relighting them either; couldn't be bothered to go back, so I hunted down a ghast, wither skeleton and blaze and made some fire charges. Needless to say as I reactivated the portals I put some chests with some means of relighting )
I think that's normal. I know that happened to Etho, and there was a guardian farm there when he created a world in 1.8 in the same seed. He ended up flooding the area and building a guardian farm there.
So it means I might be able to make a Guardian Farm close to my base in the deep oceans nearby, just need to punt around in a boat and see if I can see any Guardians about. Although without the monument, working out the boundary might be tricky! Maybe do a test world like I said earlier ...

I assumed they deactivated portals to make them recalculate due to the code changes to make your facing be more consistent. Not sure. Yeah it was a pain to fix some of them.
@Wingsrising: Etho is awesome but I sometimes wonder how he makes a living since he seems to be playing Minecraft and other games 24 hours a day.

Mintutor now works in 1.13!
MrKite & Mc_Etlam ... I salute you!

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

This is disturbing...

I think it's this video?
Yeah, seems so, around 7:40 he mentions it.

I believe he makes a living playing Minecraft and other games.
