Hey guys, so a lot of us have seen the bug in Minecraft where mobs stop spawning. I did a little investigation and think I've found out why. Please note, this is just speculation and not 100% confirmed.
The perimeter should not be 288*4. It needs to be higher since you'll be closer to one side depending on your position, potentially loading unwanted area.
This seems highly plausible. Great job on thinking this through so thoroughly and presenting it so well.
However, to make the experimentation more accurate, as much water as possible should be removed to slow down squid spawns.

If, by some freak chance the usual nonsense I generate seems to help you, there's a nice shiny green + button to tell me that I'm doing the right thing
well no wonder my mob trap hasn't been working very well. very good research. this is weird because IIRC mobs are supposed to have a 100% despawn rate outside that 144 block radius. i wonder if this fluke came with the latest update.

I've seen this problem as early as around Beta 1.2 or 1.3. I haven't been in any position to test why this has been happening until I setup this perimeter style base (thanks to Docm77's idea!).
Wait. what?
hope notch sees this

No I don't believe so. A lot of people know about it but I don't think I've ever seen it on the wiki or something.
