Since when did Nether Portals spawn floating over nothing?!
I swear it has nothing to do with the mod I'm using! All that does is turn my character into a pony. So now I'm stuck on a floating friggin' platform in survival. I'm on normal too. Going to have a Nether of a time trying to build a bridge with all the ghasts....>.< Ugh....
Any advice for this one? It's a first encounter for me.
Yeah, this happens to vanilla, and unfortunately, to me, too.
Only difference was I spawned directly on top of the lava, with no land in sight.
I guess just get some cobblestone, and build your way, making walls. It will be resource costly, but if you want to explore the Nether.... Then it's your best bet... Except Ender pearls, but that's dangerous...
Use cobblestone to encase the portal so ghasts can't blow it out, then use pistons to push sections of ghastproof tunnel further out. If you don't mind getting shot at, you can just build the bridge floor and some guard rails.
Yes, this can definitely happen. Pro tip: Don't move as soon as you get teleported to the nether. You might just walk off into a sea of lava. That is precisely what happened to me. A while back I went into the nether with full diamond and all good stuff. I was suspended over a sea of lava where I spawned, I walked right off the edge, and I think you can guess what happened next.
I don't know what the circumstances for where your portal takes you in the nether are, but apparently they allow you to spawn in mid-air nowhere near any land.

Let me know if my posts are helpful or if you like them. That's what I'm here for.
I am currently lurking more than I am posting. I haven't gone anywhere.
Nether coordinates are overworld coordinates divided by 8 for x/z and divided by 2 for y. There is an algorithm on how to determine to which portal to link to, but I would recommend having a look (using the statistics to determine directions in the nether properly), where the next land mass in the nether is. Then I would go back to the overworld and walk about 1024+ blocks into that direction and build another portal.
On the other hand, take your usual surplus of cobblestone, craft some slabs for ceilings/floors and start building a bridge. A lot of lava around you usually means a good place for some pigman farm. Holding shift while walking helps you not to fall into lava.
Specifically, this happens if there aren't any valid portal locations near (within 16 blocks in X and Z) the portal's target location. You can get the same effect when travelling to the Overworld if your target is an ocean (you might also for a snowy biome, but given the higher ground-height it would be rare for there to be no suitable caves).
As others have said, walling in the portal with cobblestone would be helpful to prevent Ghast attacks. Then, besides bridging to the side, you might also consider building a chimney up to the ceiling and digging a tunnel at around Y=120 until you get to somewhere interesting.

OP: The same thing happens to me sometimes aswell, i usually take all the supplies i need to build an automatic 'bridge Constructer' or, In other words, A cobblestone Generator.
It works quite well, and saves a LOT of time, Effort and resources.

I may not be perfect, But without imperfection; life couldn't exist.
This can also happen going from the Nether to the Overworld.
Nothing like that sinking feeling of walking out to see nothing but endless blue ocean. Followed by that excited feeling that you have a totally open expanse of nothing to fill.

This has happened to me once or twice, just remember to watch out for ghasts. Only thing better than spawning on nothing is spawning on nothing, getting your portal deactivated, and being flung into the red water below!

Why have I been gone so long? My interwebs are broken and I'm sick. Yay.

I'm surprised no-one suggested relocating the portal to the nether roof (below ceiling).
Basically... go in with a stack or two of cobble and enough Obsidian to build a portal (don't forget the flint and steel!!!), 'break' the suspended portal, pillar up into the ceiling, and build/activate the replacement. That's usually the best place to build your Nether hub anyway.
What about going into the nether only with a pick and destroy the portal? does it spawn somewhere else when using the one in the normal world again? Of course only if you want to loose 3 dias because of the pick.
and what about enderpearls? is the next "land" too far away? (ok then you could build the bridge from the other side, yeah...)
You don't need a diamond pick to destroy a portal, that's just if you want the obsidian to drop, it can be destroyed with your hand, of course it will take a while longer but it's compleatly doable. (250 seconds by hand, 62 seconds with stone pickaxe, 42 seconds with iron pickaxe vs 9 seconds with diamond pickaxe)
If you use the same Overworld portal again it will most likely spawn the new portal close to the old one, it can't put it in exactly the same place if the remains of the old one are there.
If you build a new portal in the overworld somewhere else (after destroying the one in the Nether) it will make a new one close to the appropriate coordinates for the new portal in the Overworld (X/8, Y=the same, Z/8)
I did that once, accidentally put a block in the wrong place when building a portal... Not terribly fun.
If you use the same Overworld portal again it will most likely spawn the new portal close to the old one, it can't put it in exactly the same place if the remains of the old one are there.
In this case, it probably would recreate it in exactly the same place since it's the "screw it, no valid locations anywhere nearby so I'll just put one in mid-air" fallback (you can identify this by the extra 4 obsidian blocks on the base).
Unless of course you left the top four blocks of the portal intact, in which case it might find the top of the original portal to be a valid spot...
Its possible to build a new portal in the overworld, but you have to build it 1024 blocks far away. if you build it near the old one, minecraft will use the old portal instead generating a new one. the question is, does minecraft generate a new portal, if the old one is destroyed and you build a new one closer than the 1024 blocks from the first overworld-portal?
I usually either end up underneath the lava ocean (in a cave, of course) or on a tiny ledge far from land.
I generally use World State Checkpoints and set down a checkpoint (basically a save state) before building my portals in case the portal puts me somewhere really bad. Sure, it's basically cheating, but it's better than any alternative that I can think of.
I generally load the checkpoint and build my portal somewhere else if I end up underneath the lava ocean, but being above it and far from major landmasses doesn't bother me. I love building bridges!
It also helps that I usually play on peaceful (especially in the nether), so I don't usually have to deal with ghast fireballs. People who never play on peaceful probably have a harder time building their bridges.

Yes, if 3,000 blocks away... (I believe) Some crazy number of blocks away. Otherwise the new portal will still teleport you there.
