No mods. I have only been playing a week and have not yet researched how to get them to work.
I realize that having this as my first post is strange, but it was the only thing to date that I have not been able to find an answer to on the forum.
Now that I know it is not common I wish I would have better recorded the format the gun powder was in. But as I recall it was 3-4 item slots in the chest. Varying from 3-18+ in each slot. The total being in the high 20's. Again, I wish I had more detail, but at the time I was excited to find it since I have had little luck gathering it myself (I have not tried any traps yet). In fact, I started digging in that specific area after a Creeper blew a crater on the shore and water was flowing down into it.
I decided to square off the hole and cover it back up as a side storage area when I came across the chest.
No spawner nearby that I have seen, although I have not opened up the area behind the chest. There are no moss blocks revealed.
There is an easy solution. When a Minecraft world is generated everything is tied to the seed. Including items in chests. If you use the same seed again, the same items will be there. I tested this theory with a double dungeon that had a Golden Apple in it that I found. It was on another thread which I'm sure got deleted because the OP was a troll. I'll try and find it though.
Long story short, if you provide us with the seed and the location we can confirm if this was a true rare find, or false information.

Why bother with asking questions about this. There's a chest full of gunpowder, and an abundance of sand. I think what you need to do is obvious.
Lewis, back up.
Question to the OP: Do you use mods / have used mods? Is this your first world / have you had another where you did the same thing with the chest and named it the same?

Anyways here is the Seed info to the golden apple I was talking about above. If you go to the coordinates of the Skeleton dungeon there will be a golden apple in the chest. Proving that items are the same in chests if the seed is the same. So if we get the seed info from the OP and coordinates, we can prove this is real or fake.
Seed: 1737656961366006405
Spawn: -77, 64, 109
Zombie Dungeon: -64, 65, 126 (Under the Sand if it doesn't fall right away)
Skeleton Dungeon: -52, 44, 146

Yesterday I found a chest, buried in the sand near my spawn point, that had 30+ pieces of gunpowder in it.
Anyone else found one of these? I have not found a mention of it anywhere in the wiki. If it is there can someone direct me?

This.
I downloaded the PCGamer demo last week, and purchased the game after my 90 minutes were up.
I posted this because I wanted to know if there were other hidden chests I could be looking for.
PS. Just mined around the chest and there is nothing else there. Only dirt and stone.
Also, this is only on my home computer. I cannot access this map if I sign in online from my work computer.
Chunk errors can take data from deleted or old worlds and stick it into a new one.
Yes. It is my first world.
Then I'm not exactly sure what happened, since it can't be a chunk error and it's probably not a dungeon.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
