I usually don't critizise notch on these forums. But I'm going to now. If you didn't know 1.8 won't be released until after pax in september. Sure, notch should be able to take however much time he needs. But I don't think he quite gets his community here. At least 50% of the players here have school starting back up in August. I think we were kinda hoping for a late july, early august release, that way we could actually play it during the summer(when school starts, no time).
But, alas, it isn't to be. I really think this is going to hurt Minecrafts player base. As has been said, we'll have to create new worlds when 1.8 comes out to see the new features.
So the problems I see are:
1. A lot of people are just going to stop playing for the next 2 months. Why would you start a world now knowing in 2 months your going to have to lose it all then?
2. When school starts up, many people are just going to stop playing and never come back. IF the update had came out right before school starts for most, that would have held thier attention on to full release. But now, with the lack of time, people are just going to drop this and forget about it.
3. Even if people don't have school, some will consider 3 months way too long for an update and leave. I don't really care about the time, but I know how some people can get about updates.
Thats it. This isn't meant to start a flame war, and I'm not bashing Notch. IF he wants to take this much time, thats what he thinks is good for the game. But a lot of people won't see it that way, and I think the player numbers will drop noticeably.
Notch has stated that 1.8 will be playable at PAX. In that case it would make no sense for it to be playable during PAX if it came out earlier, and PAX happens during the end of August, hence hinting a September release.
I'm tired of people saying "notch said this" if you don't have a link to the source, you may as well be making it up

He's going off the date announced that you would be able to play 1.8 pre-release at some fanfest-type thing in August.
I started a new world knowing it'd be obsolete in two months. A lot of people are. It's not exactly some great loss, you can MCedit your stuff from the old world to the new one if you want the best integration, or if you want to stay legit you can travel until new chunks are generated and you get fancy ravines and dungeons.
A lot of Minecraft's users are kids, yes, sad but true. It doesn't mean they're going to drop it entirely. They still have half an afternoon left to play, if they like the game enough they'll stay. The money's already paid anyway, it's not making any profit difference.
And if you think people are just going to leave, you don't comprehend just how much people love Minecraft.
It's pretty obvious from what he says on his Google+ account.
Mojang will be at PAX. We'll have the first playable version of the Adventure Update there, and it will be released to the public once we've adressed the feedback we get at PAX.
Yes, this is a marketing thing. :wink.gif: But also, we're doing some pretty bold changes to the game, and knowing we have the time to just play around with features we might now want to release is pretty liberating. Combat in 1.8, for example, is already way more fun than in 1.7, but it need further tweaking.
I'm sorry, but people like you are why a some people think Minecraft is basically a community filled with impatient spoiled children.
You really think that Notch is gonna release it that late because "lololol im jus gonna make them wait!!~"?
No.
This is supposed to be the update that makes Minecraft the game Notch wants it to be, and a lot of content is gonna be added, and a LOT of things will be changed. It should be understandable that this update will take a lot of time and effort. It's not like 1.7 (Which only was what it was because everyone's so god damn impatient) where there was only two new items and some bugfixes. They're fleshing out the game here.
And really? Everyone will stop playing? You really think that we're gonna just leave because we go 2 months without new content? Really? I don't know if any of you guys follow the black mesa mod, but they've been doing that for 6 years now, their fanbase is still there. Not a single demo, only one video of gameplay, and a lot of screenshots, and everyone there is still waiting patiently. Of course there's a lot of whiners, every game has it, but for the most part they're still there. And I think the minecraft community would be the same.
Huge ravines, making canyons and rifts in the world.
Randomly generated dungeons (REAL dungeons this time), ruins, and strongholds.
At least one new monster, possibly a giant bug that chews through walls.
Lots of fun new stuff in combat: blocking, critical hits, and improved weapons.
Many new animations, including swimming, blocking, and monster attacks.
Sprinting, that allows you to get to places FAST!
NPC villages and giant mushrooms.
A fancy new lighting system.
Notch said that 1.8 would take a long time. Since final release is supposed to be in November, four months away, then releasing the final content update about half-way to that point seems to make perfect sense.
But, alas, it isn't to be. I really think this is going to hurt Minecrafts player base. As has been said, we'll have to create new worlds when 1.8 comes out to see the new features.

Playerbase also doesn't mean anything. He has their money- it's up to them if they want to keep playing

So it is coming out afterward.
I don't think anyone should whine. It's just a video game after all.
Plus, you can play maps and get the new features in them. Just go to new chunks.
It's a gaming convention in the US. PAX Prime is in Washington (the last one of this year I believe)

This one is taking 6 months... so if we're going to see any optimization, it won't be until after the game is released =|
Edit: Just noticed he's only going to address the feedback from a very limited playerbase at the convention... Great. This patch is going to suck

Haven't played since a week after pistons came out, everything just feels so boring and I still have laggy FPS because of his poorly optimized code

I think that's worth waiting two more months...
That would be November 16th
