I've been playing since October, and this is the first time I've seen this. In a lava-illuminated cave, about level 13, I found a dandelion growing in some dirt.
Here's a pic, for what its worth, it would be easy to fake. Anyone else find flowers in caves completely cut off from outside?
I was under the impression that for a flower to successfully take root that it had to have unimpeded access to the sky (glass not withstanding).
I find this interesting because it means that the algorithm for flower location simply checks for light level, dirt, and airspace in only the affected block.
Yea umm question...Why is there no Grass if the dirt is in a high light level and is not man-made?
Maybe grass only spawns (upon chunk generation) on well-lit dirt if it's also the topmost block? Just a guess, but I was watching one of the really old MC youtube videos (the one where it's still referred to as a "clone of Infiniminer" :biggrin.gif:) and Notch said that grass only grows on the topmost block, because only the topmost block is in the light. Obviously this was before lava/torches/etc., and grass doesn't magically appear on topmost lit dirt blocks anymore, but it could still work that way for chunk generation. Having a topmost rule would make sense for grass, otherwise we'd get grass around many lava pools, which would just look weird.

grass doesn't grow on dirt because of light dude....'
Yea it does check the wiki. And even if it doesnt World generated dirt is grass if it has light.
And there needs to be light for there to be grass so it can spread. So in short No light=No grass and No grass=No flower

It is plausible that it is fake or the wiki is outdated. Has anyone found dirt next to lava lately?

Their server- their rules. Perhaps you hit a piece of air that belonged to them?
Also, flowers are usually found in small clumps - to me this shows that they aren't 'planted' individually, but rather a zone is selected for potential flowers and then each space in the zone is tested for a flower. This doesn't mean you can't have a clump of one, like I found.
Yeah, I know grass doesn't spawn unless it has either light from the sun, though not necessarily clearance to the sky. Maybe someone more familiar with the programming can illuminate this for me.

In my current world I've been nosing around mainly at level 10-15, so I'm finding lots of dirt next to lava. This is the first time I've found anything growing there except for 'shrooms, of course. Its these little discoveries that keep the game fresh and fun for me.
