Call it a hunch, but I think the people saying they're useless are just peeved off that Notch found the piston-airjump ridiculous and unbelievable (in a bad way). Personally, I can kind of see his point.
I can still think of hundreds of uses for pistons though. Hidden bases, lava traps, fake floors that pull out on intruders, mob traps, simple mob trap shutoffs that actually let spiders through without doors, giant drawbridges and floodgates, note-block DJ etc.
Anyone who says they're useless must think pickaxes are ho-hum.
I like how they look much better then in the mod. I think that the launch in the mod went a little overboard but I would like it if the new ones launched you a slight amount.

Now these points of data make a beautiful line...
I honestly think it's a better addition that any other upcoming feature. The huge thing missing from the game mechanics was a device that could move blocks, and now we have it. Much better than something that could easily be done later (like new mobs, etc.). This is something unique and very useful; a completely new concept. You can now create hidden doors, control water in a non-hacky way, and more. I don't see why anyone would dislike it, and personally I think that the new texture looks better and is more suited to the "feel" of Minecraft than the old one.
As for them not being usable as a jump pad, it was silly anyways, and I'd much rather have a legitimate elevator or some form of air transportation. The latter has already been "confirmed" by Notch.
If enough people want them I'm sure they could add launching pistons, if not just keep using the mod. I like the introduction of pistons because it gives people the ability to make even more complex and creative creations that I look forward to seeing.
Gogo texture pack. I just wish that we had a way to disguise more blocks so traps are less obvious.
I'll miss the launching, I was looking forward to that bit, but I'll be quite appeased with a rail station where I can hopefully *really* switch tracks, not just following a curve.

I hate you all with the passion of a thousand Taco Bell dinners.
'cept for the decent people, you get a pass from my hate train.
I like them more now that they DON'T propel entities. Getting the timing down on an air-jump plate would be just ridiculous, and probably frequently painful. With the current system we can make a safe elevator using stacks of pistons without inflicting any bodily harm.
Without pushing TileEntities, all I can see they will be useful for are (hidden) gates. Good enough for me. That said, the texture is pretty fail. The original solid iron looked way better.
Wait, you actually liked that plain iron block look? >_>
To each their own, I guess...
There's plenty of other additions in the update, you make it seem like there's nothing else and this is a fail of an update.
This update is a fail of an update. It fails me in multiple ways. I have no use for adventure improvements. Without the piston's original entity launching ability, they improve the game minimally.
I think that they won't be incredible useful in everyday functions but they are really cool for things like were shown in the demo video. The whole secret entrance with the stairs coming out and doorway opening is awesome and I can't wait to see the type of extreme things people will do with them

than don't press the "update now" button when 1.7 is released.

What is this? I don't even...
OT: I dont like them, since they cant push things with data, and they won't be able to launch stuff in the air like the original pistons
