Doh, silly me. The torches are casting colored light.
Are you sure? I think the torches simply cast a more golden colour because of the lighting changes. But I guess the changes he made to the lighting would make sense if there was going to be different coloured torches.
On the second screenshot is different colered water.

Good point, but maybe it has to do with the viewing angle of the water? Either way though, there is a file in minecraft.jar which changes the colour of water depending on how deep you are (in other words, the opacity seems to change) so maybe biome-specific water colours are coming?

Notch / Jeb tweeted that "water isn't quite done yet" when someone asked them just that question...so it CAN be that the lighting system isn't quite done yet and this is a bug...OR it CAN be that the biome specific water aren't quite done yet...sneaky b******

I saw this post and looked at the water on the day shot. And your right. The water looks really dark colored. There is a water color.png biome color thingy in the texture files already so that may be in the next update!
Edit: I feel kind of like an idiot because did not see there were two pages. Someone already said this.
Edit: To give this post a meaning rather than repeat info. I also think notch just added that yellow orb to the pic after just to troll us. It does not seem like it would work any other way. But maybe it is a hint to something coming but it does not look like it's really there.
I thought there was something suspicious about the censored changelist a while back, but I wonder what there is to find out?
