Okay, since Mushrooms slowly spread in dark areas this has got me thinking... Are there any blocks mushrooms can or cant grow on? Also how long does it take brown or red mushrooms to grow in the dark?
Also in what level of light? If mushrooms have a light of 1 a lot growing will light up a room....will that stop the growing of other mushrooms?
Also if someone where to grow mushrooms in a dark area there is a chance a creeper or spider or something might spawn inside the growing area.....to all who worry about this I had an idea.
Make a mushroom growing room in the NETHER!
No creepers or any bad things that spawn in the dark besides zombie pigmen who are harmless if you dont bother them and since the room would be sorta small ghasts cant bother you ._. Thats what I did anyway :S ....but does that work?

- Can spread to any of the 24 blocks around it (except itself, above and below), provided that space is air and the block below that air is opaque (blocks light) AND solid (blocks you physically).
- Can only spread to air spaces with a light level of 12 or lower.
- Will pop out of the ground if the block it is in has a light level of 13 or higher AND any of the 26 blocks around it is disturbed/updated.
- Spreads 1/100 slower than sugar cane growing.
- Has double the chance to select a block that is on level ground with itself to spread to, than a block 1 level above or below it.
- Emits light level 1 - since light levels drop by 1 per orthogonal block away from a light source, it effectively doesn't light up anything but itself.
- Has no spreading limits given enough growing time, other than being unable to spread to blocks 2 higher/lower.
I'm sorry but I have to say it... It's how to, not how two. Two = 2.
OT: Make a dark room under your house or wherever, make a checkerboard pattern with redstone torches and mushrooms, or a grid pattern: ( = redstone torch)
That gives you some light so you can see what's going on, but it's still dark enough for mushrooms to grow... It's also dark enough for monsters to spawn however, but the redstone torches make it less likely to happen.
What will be interesting to see is an automated farm. I foresee once pistons are added to the game one could somehow build a light source on the roof that could be activated with a lever that would unblock a glowstone or torch to let light in. Something like:
white cloth = piston
This way when you want to harvest your crop you canlet the light in which then causes all the mushrooms to pop up. It would also allow you to see if there are any visitor's in your farm.
Another way would be to build the farm just below the surface and replace the torch with so it will burn up any that spawned in the farm.
You can already create automated farms for mushrooms - better even than wheat farms since no seeding is required.
Use alternating one-block high channels to plant the "seed" mushrooms on. The mushrooms will spread to the low channels. Send a wave of water down the low channels only to harvest. If you then cover the low channels so they are now only one high, no spawns will happen within the farm. Yes, shrooms can spread to the covered channel. I happen to use glass to cover my channels so I can see if there are enough shrooms to harvest, but you could probably use anything.
You can't place mushrooms on glass and half blocks...
Redstone torches are also an alternative since repeaters require more stone, although there is a slight chance mobs can spawn. You can also set it up in a 24 block radius from your spawn point, wherere no mobs spawn.
That's the beauty of the water-channel auto-harvesting mushroom farm mentioned above. Since you don't need physical access to the mushrooms, you can enclose them all in a 1-high space so there is 0 chance of monsters spawning.

Mushrooms can't grow on blocks where you can't place torches and tracks on if I remember correctly.

This was already discussed and optimized.

if you're really feeling lazy just hollow out a giant area in the Nether and plant them there.
-place 5 in a cave
-stand outside the cave for 5 minutes
-harvest the endless bounty
= Torch Under Glass
Light level in the corners and the center = 8
Light level on top of glass block: 12 (mushrooms can't grow on glass anyway)
This design gives 77 mushrooms per full harvest. It stops all mob spawning.

Yeah I know I just felt like typing it like that ^^
Grow up and reported for spam
But does it work in the nether?edit: it works in the nether yay! :biggrin.gif:
