my son and I have been starting to get into Minecraft last few weeks. We are playing survival mode. We have built many things but struggling with the nether portal. Each time we build one and go through it, we land in lava and die. Do we need to build the portal inside a structure or anywhere in particular? thanks in advance :)Bailey Boy

No, what you are describing doesn't make sense. If the purple portal animation appears within the obsidian, you have made the portal right. When you fall into lava, is it after you step out of the portal or while you are on the portal? I suggest bringing cobble, shifting, and creating a safe platform. If it is while you are still on the portal, lava may be rushing in. To fix this, run a LONG way away in the overworld and create a new portal.
Is kinda common the portal in the Nether be close to or above a lava lake.
Try hold shift as you pass the portal (to avoid fall the edge of the portal) and build a safe platform around the portal (with walls to avoid Ghasts). You'll need to go slow to avoid death. If you're not familiar on how the Nether is generated and how the portals link to the overworld you can read more about in the wiki page - like The Nether, Nether Portal (to understand its behavior) and even a calculator (to help you calculate the right coordinates to link the portals in both dimensions).
Personally, I recommend you to plan the trip using a map explorer like Minutor - since your're new the best is make some test worlds to get some "experience" first (and to experiment some different seeds), but this program can make you understand what your're making wrong.
Gothmog, yes i have built the portal properly, but no matter where i place it, i always drop directly into lava lake as i pass through then burn up almost immediately. I have tried holding shift, but still just falling into lava. I dont get why i cant go through and come out on land.
Do as the people said (go far and build a new portal), but will be worst than you think: you'll need to go at least 1025 blocks away from the overworld portal (translating in a 128 distance from your original portal in the nether, that is the area the game will look for another portals in the nether to link), and you'll need to find that first portal and destroy it, otherwise every single portal you make in the area will send you to your personal death trap hehe.
Portals are *supposed* to spawn on ground, not in the air. It might just be a tiny floating platform of netherrack, but at least it's ground. I'm wondering if it didn't spawn on gravel that subsequently fell into the lava. Some ideas:
1) Try entering the portal from the other side, maybe that might spawn you facing the other direction and there will be a bit of ground there.
2) You might try using some potions of fire resistance to get you out of the lava (if it's not in the middle of a huge lava sea).
3) If you can stay on the portal itself, without leaving, you should be able to build your own platform (using shift to crouch)
4) If all else fails, build another portal 1024 blocks away, then come back to the first nether portal and build up to it.
The MP server I play on has had a problem for a while now where when you exit a portal, whether you're in the Nether or the Overworld, you are actually offset a block or two from the portal. This could be happening.
thanks for all the suggestions. I have been destroying and rebuilding the same portal a few hundred blocks away each time. I guess i just have to move even further to avoid landing in the lava pools.

Also can we go straight back through to portal to get back home ?
