So like with 1.6 making mushrooms spread there is a new building all well respected bases will need- the mushroom farm! Of course they only grow in dark conditions...
So how many people are going to hear the monster groans coming from their shroom farm and be too scared to go in? Even scarier- if there isn't any groans it could be creepers!

Be a man! Sure, it'll probably end up destroying the farm, but who cares! You get the satisfaction of knowing you didn't chicken out.
I am thinking maybe something like this (side view)
Use the glass so you can see in to the actual farm, that way you can see if there are any friends hanging about. Have torches on the path outside, placing them right you should get enough light to see in the farm area. Also a door to get in and out. Of course also need a roof >.>
Should be able to make a room with platforms for the mushrooms, not high enough for monsters to spawn, and walkways dug down in between with half block floor. Monster problem eliminated.
I won't bother making a mushroom farm, other than for a server contest or demonstration purpose. Plenty of more efficient means of healing to bother with it. But then the same tends to go with wheat farms too. Two or three cooked pork is all I ever need on a usual expedition, so everything else seems like a big fat waste of time. :tongue.gif:

Perhaps, if you lined your walls with arrow dispensers, you could simply use those to clear off any unwanted personnel in your mushroom farm, at the cost of some arrows. Of course, making mushroom farms in the Nether is also a plausible possibility.
These mushrooms were planted during the night, up to the end of the rows you can still see. They were all fine (including mushrooms next to torches) until the sun came up.
Looks like mushrooms need "no sunlight", but don't care about torchlight. Will test glowstone and lava light sources next.
We know lava doesn't effect them, since they grow near it in the Nether. Short of the sun, isn't lava the brightest light?

You can't put mushrooms directly on top of the glowstone, or directly next to the lava; but the mushrooms in the picture are perfectly fine.
This (and the previous picture) shows where mushroom won't die. This doesn't necessarily mean they'd be able to grow like this though - can't test that yet..
If they ignore torchlight then mushroom farms will be dead easy. If not then what we will have to do is make a checker board pattern like
where = anything that prevents mob spawns
so that spiders cant spawn AND have the roof only one block high so tall mobs cant spawn

Yea, you'd have to make the ceiling out of an easily destroyable block (dirt for example). Dismantle the ceiling, harvest and then replace it but what would you rather do, that, or fight off half a dozen assorted mobs?

Once pistons are in, use sticky pistons (if available) to make a raisable roof. :biggrin.gif:

Assuming that pistons actually make it in :tongue.gif:
I'm not claiming my design is the best on ever but it would work. I suppose the alternative is to plant them under trees and wait for skele/zombie mobs to burn and spiders to go neutral to harvest, that way you only need to deal with creepers

Luckily he's fixing the charge level of creepers when they loose line of sight, too. I hated that..

It probably wont give off enough light to stop mobs from spawning.
My humble LPs can be found here.
Once pistons are brought in, make light switches with glow stone and T flip-flop gates.

That would make it fairly hard to get in and harvest your lovely mushrooms...
I want pistons now please:
..for push-button shroom harvesting.
