As most of us already know, the 1.6 update is going to make mushrooms spread very slowly, adding the ability to farm mushrooms! Thanks Notch! Now, what I want to know, is how many of you are already planning or building a mushroom farm of your own. If you can post screenshots of it!
Make rows of 3 wide, X long (depending on your needs/desires) section of dirt. It would only have 1 block above it between it and the ceiling. In between, use smooth stone half-block walkways to move between them. If you really need some light, make a glass window letting in a small amount of light, or use redstone torches. This will prevent mob spawns (except maybe spiders on the dirt), let you see, but also allow mushrooms to grow.
Like such. The mushrooms will spread, prevent most spawns, and let you get through as well.
This is Minecraft. Eventually, I'll build anything.
Lightstone might be an ideal material for mushroom farming.

Most certainly. A food source that is easy to grow en masse, can carry dozens of hearts worth of healing in 3 stacks, and heals a **** ton per use? Sign me up.

I think only direct sunlight affects them. I'll go test in a minute with torch/lava light.
EDIT: Torch and lava light is fine, direct sunlight isn't.
I am sure he will make it so that they don't despawn in light besides sunlight but to get them to spread they need to be in the dark. Now that I think about it when things like pistons come out we can just have lights we can turn on and off using a lever. So we can turn off the lights and let them grow and then turn it on and take out the monsters and get the mushrooms then turn the lights back off.
How ever we wont know untill the update so we have to keep that in mind. So I will probably not make mine untill the update comes out and I know how it works.

A wise man understands that he understands nothing. A wise man does not sound much different then me.
when I read about the update and that mushrooms spread I went into the nether went exploring and gathered over 400 mushrooms (they spawn for me a little more brown then red) my world file went from 19mb to 40mb and when I had to walk back to my base after getting lost and making a new portal it went up to 60mb in size then i built a HUGE 2 block high cave for mushrooms to grow when they do,its mushroom space mushroom space
space mushroom space mushroom thinking of make it where theres 2 spaces between each mushroom but see no point to that

The compass is freaking sexy though.
Those diagonal pixels harden my nipples.
I couldn't care less about starting a farm for them. If I can't find enough in the regular world for some reason, there's plenty in the Nether. :tongue.gif:

Keep the light low and watch out for monsters spawning in the dim areas.
In that case it could be dangerous with mobs spawning. :tongue.gif:

Yeah, I believe you're correct now that I think about it.
Nevermind what I said earlier, then.
Yeah but you have to be able to 'seed' them. That requires some 2-high access paths.

I'm probably going to make this(cross section):
And just repeat that down the hallway. No mobs, can take out the torches if the mushrooms need a lower light level, and mobs won't spawn.

I've seen mushrooms grow on trees, sand, stone, dirt and grass.
