They are the same things, I don't prefer either, use what you got. Both are just as easy to get.
-EDIT- you just removed the both option.. sad face.
- Yeah, I figured almost EVERYONE would choose that. I don't want any, "Well, I use both of them!" responses. I want Primary replies. Something like, "Coal, because it is easier and faster to find." or something like, "Charcoal because I f.cking hate trees!"
- You gets the point? :smile.gif:

They are 100% Awesome.
After putting together a tree farm, I find the prospect of making charcoal less an issue, and certainly easily done if I have a small stash of starter fuel. Beats having to keep foraging further and further out for easily reachable coal veins.
Not to say that I won't mine coal, or that it doesn't come in handy as a constantly replenish-able source of light while spelunking. With the need to use smooth stone for stone half-blocks, it is worthwhile to invest in a sustainable way to collect fuel.
I wouldnt say I really have a preference. When I need to toss something into the furnace, I use what I have handy. Having said that, I almost always have way too much coal, so coal it is. Wood isnt a pain to harvest, imho, but I always have less of it on hand than coal and need to use it for so many other things, so, the bottom line vote for me?
Charcoal the first night. It lets you concentrate on punching trees to get wood, and finding a good spot to dig your first mine entrance/shelter, rather than running all over the spawning area desperately looking for exposed coal.
Coal mostly thereafter. When I'm mostly digging tunnels and mineshafts, coal is plentiful, because it can be found at all levels. If you're digging anything bigger than an overnight hidey-hole, you're probably gonna run into a coal vein before long, and coal veins tend to be fairly substantial. It's not unusual to run into veins of 40 or more coal blocks.
When I'm taking a break from mining to build something on the surface, coal can run short, from being used to make torches and smelting glass and smoothstone. So then I happily resort to charcoal...if I'm up on the surface, stopping to chop some wood is not a big deal. And since I don't usually use wood as a major structural component of my buildings, I only run short of wood when I am spending weeks on end underground and haven't yet built a tree farm.
But I tend to spend weeks on end underground fairly often, and would rather use my brief sojourns above ground to hunt mobs rather than forestry, so coal tends to be my fuel of preference.

Is it just me, or does the lines of gold ingots look like they slope down lol.
I use Charcoal primarily, although I welcome the coal I get when mining. It's easier to find, and I prefer stone structures.

I used to use coal in the beginning and I still have a lot, but since I made my tree farm I have like 3 chests full of logs that need smelting. So charcoal, but I'll still mine coal.
When I first start a new world, I prefer charcoal because trees are just to easy to find. But, when I get further into the game, I rather use coal because of its huge abundance.

I usually use coal... just cause.
But I got 2.5ish stacks of birch wood today, so maybe I'll make a bit of charcoal.
Btw, those guys aren't trolls. If anything, they're flamers, not trolls, but they're not imo. It's really annoying when you label these "Awesome poll" when there's nothing awesome about them (compared to other polls). And the overuse of smilies is just an eyesore. Lemme guess, you're gonna add me to the "trolls" section now?
