Ok, not mining PER SE, but ceratin layers. Everyone knows than the best place to branch mine is on layers 10-16 (Or something like that). Point is, this effectivly renders the other mining layer USELESS (Well, except for the obvious, aka to get to the surface).
I KNOW than there are still reasons to be out of the "optimal limit to mining". Like, spenlunking. A lot of people like Spenlunking (Myself included), sometimes even more than just plain Branch Mining. But still, it dosnt changes the very fact than, if you want to go practical, you NEED to do it this way around.
Of course, randomizing it all wouldt help. And it DOES make sence than the most important ores are on the deeper layers, but maybe they could add something in between. I dunno, a special ore or something. Not even an ore, maybe something like relics? Certain items? Maybe the dungeons are more prominent in midlayers? ANYTHING AT ALL????
But then, just because those layers have the highest concentration of goodies (and because Diamonds only tend to show up around those levels) doesn't make the other layers pointless... just less important.
For one thing, those other layers are where I get most of my cobblestone from: takes less time to get down to those levels, and I don't mess up my mining system by knocking out the wrong wall :smile.gif:
mob farms with underground spawning rooms, you can't fit them all down at the bottom :biggrin.gif:
and i tend to make my home in the upper layers, stretching to the bottom areas
Serious question: What the hell are you talking about?
I'll summarize your idea - Branch mining ruins mining....what? Why? Because people mine on levels 10-16? Explain that because I don't get it.
I personally still mine on higher levels to get iron and coal. Your topics confuse me a lot of the time man.
I think he's saying that people just ignore all the levels above 16. I know I do. I get pretty much everything I need (redstone, iron, gold, ,cobble, etc) while looking for diamond. It's like asking notch to just make the earth 16 layers deep because no on is going to use the other layers anyway. At least thats what I think he's saying...

I think he's making radom threads...that seems to be his MO.
And why point out branch mining for this thread? Not all people branch mine. Is there experience not ruined if they stay on level 10-16 because they don't? It doesn't make sense.
And GAH! I just bumped this pointless thread. *facepalm* I'm out.
I think mining is the act of getting materials and some people want a more efficient form of mining . Nothing wrong with that. I like 19 for a level for me though.
I believe this to be a valid point actually. Unless you do a lot of spleunking, you'll most likely be branch/strip mining at the 10-16 layers below the world. I know I do that.

Really? I hire migrant Filipino children to mine for me! Ah, capitalism at it's best. [iapprove]
No matter what you do, people will figure out the optimal way to deal with it. Make it completely random? Some smart people will go overboard with statistics and come up with the perfect mining pattern. Have the game actively try and hide diamonds by generating them in new chunks in different laters? People will reverse engineer the code and figure out how to force the generator to do what we want.
Same thing with mob traps - they exist because mobs only spawn in darkness. Once you know that, of course we'll light up safe areas, and force mobs into where we want.
What you're seeing isn't hacking or exploiting - it's human nature. Until the last century or two, those who didn't behave this way died. When meals are days apart, you don't have the calories to waste doing things inefficiently. It's interesting seeing how it translates to a game.
branch mining on those deep layers is the most effective way to get DIAMOND, nothing more
if you are specifically after certain materials, such as iron, there are faster ways to do it than branch mining. for example, vertical mining yields more iron faster.
It depends on the way you derive enjoyment from the game.
If you like the adventure and rewards of exploration and structure, that's what Minecraft is all about. How you go about it is largely a matter of perspective. Some prefer to build maximum-efficiency material farms, easy-access points, and careful, methodical placement of bases and vaults. Some prefer to just wing it and wander aimlessly into whatever open chasm beckons the loudest. There are a million variants in between, and your choice isn't any more "ruinous" or "wrong" than anyone else's.
To claim, as it were, that mining at a particular level is an "exploit" is also a bit foolish. In the real world, prospectors examine only specific strata when mining for particular materials, since they are far more likely to exist at certain ranges of depth. So, depending on what you're looking for, the depth of your mine can be a strong determining factor in its output, which makes a great deal of sense, if you ask me.

"Any sufficiently sentient being feels a certain alarm at the prospect of ceasing to exist."
I feel that branch mining are for those who are determined to find stuff.
Those who just wana explore caves, like I, are more determined to explore the whole ****ing cave and see how many ores you can rack up.

Not at all.
After all, what's the game called, again?

i'm not sure what else to say other than that.
