So, the other day I finished my mob spawner using this tutorial right here.
It's a pretty cool design and works wonderfully for my friends. However, in my case, after using it for 10 to 20 minutes mob spawns begin to reduce to the point that they dont spawn AT ALL.
I'm curious as to what could be causing this and was hoping that the brilliance of the minecraft community could aid me in figuring out the issue behind my lack of spawns.
Also, I've gone and used MCedit to check the caves beneath my spawner for a 144x144 radius and they've all been filled up/torched. I've also gone ahead and placed torches in an organized grid around the spawner for the same radius to prevent spawns above ground.
In essence, part of my map is so lit up, it's like taking ecstasy then staring at a flashlight on steroids.
Sorry about that, SSP.
The thing is, I have done that and it works just fine again, but maybe 10 minutes later the spawns drop to nothing once again. :/
Try digging around your spawner. There may be some kind of super-cave(s) that's taking away from all the spawned baddies. I'm not an expert on these things though, but that might be your best bet. Perhaps lighting the surrounding areas up, so no baddies spawn on the surface at night.
If that doesn't work, then I can't help you. Sorry.

i am having this exact same problem. i spent a total of about 8 hours building my spawner (100% legit). i tested it for an hour, and was happy, but not satisfied. i mean, who doesnt want bigger and better? so i almost doubled its size and tested again. 20 minutes in i had a TON of stuff, then it steadily decreased to about 1 item per hour, if that. frustrated i downloaded MCedit and lit all caves and surface around the spawner, and still had the same thing happen. i think notch just hates me lol.

Same problem here. I found that moving away from the collection point and moving around a bit restarted the spawns so I built a small-ish minecart loop around the area. This seemed to work well but eventually they still stop spawning. I might just need to make a bigger track, I dunno, I kind of got tired of messing with it.
This thread has some info and appears to have solved the problem, but it seems like too much effort to me: viewtopic.php?f=1020&t=201094
@pelirrojo173, thanks for the link...it has answered my question AND given me a quick fix without completely re-doing my mob spawner, but sounds like im going to have to do a lot more lighting in a 290x290 area instead of 144x144 lol. this could take a very, very long time lol. but anyway i appreciate your input.
